**Small Arms Survey Director**

**General description of the position**

The Small Arms Survey is a center for applied knowledge on matters of control and proliferation of small arms, associated parts and ammunition. We produce the latest evidence and expert thinking to inform policy and practice through a combination of data, evidence-based knowledge, authoritative resources and tools, expertise, technical assistance, and the convening of practitioners and policymakers.

**Mission and activities**
The Director provides overall executive direction to the Small Arms Survey and oversees the implementation of its five-year strategy and annual work plans. Supported by the Management Team, the Director represents the Survey at the highest levels, provides guidance and leadership to the Survey’s 40-person team, and ensures its thematic relevance and financial sustainability.

**Key responsibilities**:
**Strategic management**
- Formulate strategies and work plans attuned to the needs of counterparts and donors with the support of the Survey’s experts.
- Oversee the implementation and periodic review of the Survey’s five-year strategy.
- Lead and coordinate all the activities and work of the Survey, i.e. oversee the development of the Survey’s research agenda and implementation of evidence-based capacity support projects, publications and activities.
- Oversee the formulation and implementation of fundraising initiatives.
- Ensure the autonomy of the Small Arms Survey and its public reputation as an objective, impartial, evidence-driven institution.
- Provide guidance and coordination to the management team and facilitate a collaborative team environment.
- Coordinate and lead the meetings of the Survey’s Strategic Council.

**Representation**
- Represent the Survey in public events, conferences, meetings, workshops, communication with donors, etc.
- Provide senior-level support to projects and activities as appropriate.
- Represent the Survey in its institutional relations with the Geneva Graduate Institute, the Survey’s Strategic Council, and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, among others.
- Oversee and participate in the corporate communication strategy.

**Financial and Talent management**
- Ensure the financial sustainability of the Survey through appropriate fundraising and financial management.
- Lead the preparation of annual budgets.
- Oversee the recruitment of staff, by delegation when appropriate; review and approve staff performance reviews.
- Promote and guarantee a safe and welcoming working environment for all team members; periodically evaluate staff satisfaction; ensure equal opportunities for advancement, development, and other benefits for all team members.
- An advanced academic degree in a relevant field.
- A minimum of 15 years of experience at a senior level in the areas of small arms, security, governance, or related fields.
- Extensive knowledge of national and international arms control frameworks.
- Extensive experience managing teams and projects and providing financial oversight in non-profit environments.
- Extensive experience in fundraising.
- Field experience in conflict and/or fragile areas.
- Professional fluency in English, written and spoken, French an asset. Other UN languages (Spanish, Arabic) are advantageous.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills.
- Ability to lead effectively, with empathy and fairness, in a multicultural and multilingual environment; excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities.
- Ability and willingness to engage in travel, including to fragile contexts.
