The Position

VARO Legal is a diverse, collegiate team of 15 excellent professionals (most with extensive experience working for top international law firms), priding itself on its partnership with the business. We benefit from diversity of gender and nationality. The team is growing, making this an exciting time to join us in our growth ambitions.

Most of the VARO Legal Team members do general commercial law support work for the business, and in addition some specific focal points, such as international trading and supply, retail, renewables regulations, HR matters or IT & Digitalization. Others focus on corporate matters, insurances, business development and/or M&A.

This role will report into the Senior Legal Counsel Switzerland, who is based in Baar. This role will also be based in the Baar office as well. Currently the German-Swiss desk consist of two senior legal counsels, a legal counsel and a business lawyer (one in based in Baar (Switzerland) and three in Hamburg).

Your key responsibilities
- Day-to-day legal support to the various business units: trading, sales, storage and logistics of traditional (bio)fuels, refining, biogas, hydrogen, green electricity, e-mobility, carbon offtake and trading, and carbon-based crypto assets
- Working closely with the business managers, as well as a variety of commercial and operational colleagues
- Adding value to the commercial teams and professionalism of the organization
- Being part of VARO’s legal team guarding and advising on VARO’s high compliance and ESG standards

Your profile - Essential

knowledge, skills &
abilities
- Qualified lawyer/legal counsel (MLaw/lic. iur.) with a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in an (international) law firm or an (international energy) company in the legal department
- Experience and genuine interest in commercial law, energy law, and drafting and advising on relevant commercial contracts
- Excellent ability (or at least eagerness to learn) to translate (complex) legal analysis into business interests
- A flexible, communicative, professional with a critical mind-set who wishes to be a business partner to the commercial organization (trading, sales, refining and other operations)
- Interest and ability to work in an international setting with multi-disciplinary and cross-functional teams, with a strong awareness of cultural differences
- Native / business-fluent in German and English
