Bern, Schweiz Universität Bern Vollzeit

The goal of the proposed PhD project is to improve our atmosphere model by refining the description of the atmospheric contributions by solar wind ions and micro-meteorites. Solar wind ions (mainly protons, but also helium and heavier ions) release surface material (atoms and molecules) when they encounter solid surfaces. The released surface atoms and molecules become part of the atmosphere. In the inner Solar System, solar wind sputtering is one of the main processes that feeds planetary atmospheres. Micro-meteorites are micro
- to millimeter-sized particles that, like larger meteorites, release great amounts of surface material into the atmosphere in form of vapor plumes. While beeing much less stable than solar wind sputtering, micro-meteorite impact vaporization can at times dominate all other atmospheric source processes.

Understanding the relationship between planetary surfaces and planetary atmospheres is crucial to infer surface compositions from planetary atmosphere measurements, one of the expertises of the Space Science Group at the University of Bern. These model improvements are targeted at Mercury and the Moon, but can also be used to study atmospheres of other rocky objects within our Solar System, e.g., asteroids or mineral patches found on icy moons. A first use-case of the refined model will be the simulation of the mineral content in Mercury's atmosphere in preparation for the upcoming BepiColombo measurements. BepiColombo is an ESA mission that was launched towards Mercury in October 2018. BepiColombo consists of two spacecraft, the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (led by ESA) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (led by JAXA, the Japanese space agency). The University of Bern is involved in several instruments on the Mercury Planetary Orbiter, most notably in the 'Search for Exosphere Refilling and Emitted Neutral Abundances (SERENA)' instrument. the PhD student will be involved in the analysis and interpretation of the data, including comparing the measurement data with the obtained model results.

The position is available immediately. An MSc in physics or astrophysics or similar experience is required. Proficient English language skills, both written and spoken, are also required; German language skills are a plus. Experience in programming is desired. The salary is in accordance with the personnel regulations of the Canton of Bern.
