What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Your role
The x-ray Specialist is a member of the ICRC hospital team who works in ICRC assisted or independent hospital settings in often limited resources and challenging security environments. As a x-ray Specialist, you will evaluate the radiology & ultrasonography units and together with ICRC health team, identify any additional needs in terms of training, equipment and infrastructure. You will develop the local capacity of clinical and technical staff by providing adequate trainings to ensure quality medical imaging services.
In close collaboration with the ICRC hospital team and local counterpart, you will ensure medical imaging is conducted at recognized standards and ensure that radiology and ultrasonography services are managed following appropriate best practices.
Main responsibilities
Assess the technical and organizational set-up of diagnostic imaging services and Ensure adequate functioning of analogue and/or digital X-ray and ultrasonography services and development of guidelines including implementation of quality control measures in ICRC field and supported hospitals
Make technical suggestions/recommendations to improve the quality of diagnostic imaging services.
Design and provide technical training for local X-ray and ultrasound Specialists and Technicians to ensure procedures for medical imaging are implemented and respected according to national and international standards
Ensure optimum safety measures for local staff and patients during imaging procedures
Provide and promote strict radiation hazard precautions
Ensure precise and clear medical documentation for patient records and proper medical imagery management is followed
Liaise and work with Medical Equipment/Biomed Specialists to ensure the proper installation or equipment and accessories, maintenance of the equipment with updated procedures and guidelines as well as ensure the provision of enough and adequate medical imaging materials and consumables
Education and Experience required
Bachelor’s degree or Associate Degree/Diploma in Medical Radiography, medical Imaging, or equivalent
Minimum 5 years of experience in this field of Medical Radiography, X-Ray Specialist or similar, preferably in resource limited settings
Significant experience in a general hospital radiology department with trauma cases and emergencies
Broad experience in working with analogue and digital X-Ray and ultrasonography. Other imaging methods an asset.
Fluency in English and/or French
A good command of a second language is a strong asset (Spanish, Arabic, Russian)
Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
Desired profile and skills
Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in a complex environment
Previous experience in international humanitarian projects
Positive, flexible and able to adapt to challenging living conditions and/or unstable security environment
Previous experience within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement is an asset
