- Org. Setting and Reporting Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. Economic growth and community well-being are directly impacted by disasters. As key members of communities and drivers of growth, private sector companies have an important role to play in reducing disaster risk. As threats to communities and economic livelihoods increase, the private sector continues to grow its understanding of where to adapt and respond. To drive change and leadership from the business community, the ARISE Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies was started by UNDRR in 2015 to support the private sector to become a key partner in reducing disaster risk. It has grown to over 550 members and 29 networks across the world. There is incredible energy and appetite to grow ARISE and to equip it to effect change in how the private sector invests in a risk-informed sustainable future. The UNDRR-convened network of corporate Chief Resilience Officers (CROs) intends to advance the resilience of businesses to disaster, and hence the one of society as a whole. The network will gather key senior experts from 10 to 20 large multinationals to share, establish, and disseminate good practices internationally. Responsibilities: Responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: -Provide support to policy development and preparing written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports, presentations, meeting minutes, talking points and speeches. -Support organization of meetings and workshops, side events, and assist in strengthening private sector engagement for disaster risk reduction with the ARISE Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies and the corporate Chief Resilience Officers (CRO) network. -Assist in maintaining databases, collecting and systematizing information on members and projects from these networks focused on improving business resilience. Conduct data analysis and visualization. -Support outreach and develop content for UNDRR workspaces, websites, mailing lists, social media, and other relevant channels. -Provide ad hoc support to other UNDRR partner and stakeholder work. This internship is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Partnerships Unit of the Inter-governmental processes, Interagency cooperation and Partnerships Branch. The Intern reports to the Programme Management Officer. This internship is for a duration of six months and designed to be remote and full-time.
- Qualifications/special skills
- To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: - be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
