The Wyss Academy for Nature at the University of Bern's vision is to achieve a just and sustainable world in which nature conservation and human wellbeing reinforce each other. Our goal is to bring different stakeholders together to research, co-design, and implement innovative solutions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, land use change and rising inequality by connecting technical, social, economic, institutional and policy innovations at the interface of nature and people. The Wyss Academy comprises four regional hubs, one each in Europe (Switzerland), South America (Peru), East Africa (Kenya), and Southeast Asia (Laos).
As an innovation-oriented and knowledge-based organisation, learning from success and failure of our activities is key to our success. Therefore, we seek to build a Learning, Monitoring, and Evaluation (LM&E) system that supports our internal learning and shares insights with partners and wider audiences, systematically evaluates progress and set-backs of knowledge-based engagement, assesses the outcomes achieved through our incubator projects, and monitors the pathways to systems transformation. LM&E approaches will also help us understand how the science we produce and the knowledge we make available is being taken up, by whom and with what aim and in how far we are able to forge new alliances with decision makers to overcome blockages to systems transformation. The LM&E system will also be instrumental in steering our different business units: the Stewardship Hubs, the Global Policy Outreach and Synthesis Centre, the Transformational Research Teams and the Management Centre on our journey of constant learning and evidence-based improvement.
For this exciting and unique undertaking in developing and implementing of the Wyss Academy for Nature's Learning, Monitoring and Evaluation strategy, we are seeking a
Learning, Monitoring and Evaluation Lead
Your tasks:
In close collaboration with all units at the Wyss Academy for Nature, you are responsible to lead the development and implementation of an overarching LM&E strategy and system, including:
- Identifying key evaluation questions and indicators to monitor, assess, and where feasible measure, inputs, processes, outputs, outcomes and impacts at incubator, landscape and global levels;
- Developing approaches to identify and assess factors that contribute or hinder pathways to systems transformation;
- Drafting a learning strategy and related processes, both for internal and external audiences;
- Supporting the Regional Stewardship Hubs to contextualize the LM&E strategy to the country contexts and the specific nature-people challenges addressed;
- Developing and implementing a staffing and capacity building plan and working closely with LM&E staff in our Regional Stewardship Hubs;
- Working closely with the communications teams to report on results, outcomes, impacts and organizational learning;
- Designing and delivering meta-level achievement reports, including to our Board and the Advisory Committee, on a regular basis.
Your qualifications:
- Higher education / further training and at least 10 years' experience in learning, monitoring and evaluation of complex, transdisciplinary and intercultural 'science-into-practice/policy' initiatives in sustainable development, nature conservation and/or natural resource management;
- Solid knowledge of approaches to learning, monitoring, evaluation and performance measurement and related innovative methods and tools, including both quantitative and qualitative methods, and a clear understanding of their advantages and limitations;
- Experience in developing and implementing an evaluation framework/system across multiple continents, disciplines, thematic foci, programmes and project streams and involving actors from different sectors;
- A creative, experimentative and critical thinking mindset to support learning and unlearning, and to promote continuous innovation in a knowledge-based institution;
- Excellent communication skills and fluency in English both written and oral. Additional languages are an asset, especially Spanish;
- Substantial field experience in the Global South.
