Junior Science Consultant

The Consultant will report to the Senior Advisor to the Secretary General and will coordinate closely with the Junior Consultant in Peace and Security / Executive Office, to support the work of the IPU in the field of science and technology and related fields.

**Deliverables**:
The consultant will assist the Senior Adviser to the Secretary General and the Executive Office with the following deliverables:

- Attend meetings and support in the drafting of reports for IPU activities in the areas of science and technology;
- Propose and develop project management tools aimed at facilitating work in the area of science and technology;
- Conduct research, attend meetings and draft reports for IPU activities in the areas of science and technology;
- Assist in designing new projects in science and technology and set up mechanisms for their effective follow-up;
- Draft the agenda, convocation, background documents and reports of the Working Group on Science and Technology, and all documents relevant to the IPU Science for Peace Schools;
- Organise and provide technical and logístical support for workshops and meetings;
- Ensure effective follow-up of Working Group on Science and Technology meetings, including the implementation of agreed-upon Work Plans;
- Prepare PowerPoint presentations and other communication material on programme activities;
- Liaise with external partners to advance the agenda of the science and technology programme;
- Draft a budget for the science and technology programme;
- Any other deliverables as many be deemed necessary.

**Results expected**:
High-quality outputs; speedy delivery of services. Excellent research and drafting skills, production of high-calibre reports and efficiency in providing general administrative and logístical support to the Senior Adviser to the Secretary General. A high level of discretion, political tact and commitment is essential.

**Work implies frequent interaction with the following**:

- Parliamentarians, Secretaries General/clerks of parliament, parliamentary staff
- Members of the IPU Secretariat
- Specialized IPU bodies and committees
- External partners and institutions, including UN experts and other intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, such as CERN, diplomatic missions and embassies.

**Competencies**:
Professionalism: Proven ability to produce reports and papers; knowledge of project development; proven knowledge of the role, structure and working methods of parliaments, and ability to work independently under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Planning and organizing: Demonstrated organizational skills; ability to establish priorities and to plan and monitor own work plan and meet deadlines. Demonstrated use of initiative in facilitating the production of a complex work product. Personal attributes of self-motivation, tact, sound judgement and a preparedness to accept responsibility.

Communication: Ability to write and to communicate clearly and concisely.

Team work: Aptitude for human contacts and resourcefulness; team spirit; adaptability to working environments and conditions.

Commitment to continuous learning: Aptitude to keep abreast of new developments in the relevant fields and to develop own research skills.

Managing performance: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate own work with that of others.

**Qualifications**:
Education: Advanced university degree in engineering, scientific fields, international relations, political science, law or a related field.

Language: A perfect command of written and spoken English, and an excellent knowledge of French. Knowledge of other languages, in particular UN languages, will be an advantage.

Experience: At least 1 year of work experience in a similar or relevant field, including diplomacy and science. Previous experience working in a parliamentary environment, including the IPU, will be a distinct advantage.

This consultancy is being offered at CHF 5,500 per month.
