Statistician (Temporary Job Opening) [temporary]

This position is located in the Statistics Service of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Statistician will report to the Head of the Service.

**Responsibilities**:
Within delegated authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:

- Coordinate and supervise the development of appropriate methods and systems to obtain relevant data, correct errors and impute/estimate missing data in trade and development statistics.
- Coordinate the development and publication of new UNCTAD statistical indicators. Ensure the quality of collected/derived data for accuracy, consistency and comparability.
- Plans and conducts analytical programmes of work in relevant areas of statistics. This may include: identifying projects, conducting analysis and participating in technical advisory activities for national capacity building.
- Supervises and contributes to the development of relevant databases, web publishing tools, e.g., to lead Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) initiatives and other software for collection, storage and distribution of statistical data.
- Undertakes methodological research with regard to standards on concepts, definitions and classifications to assist countries and other constituents in strengthening their statistical development.
- Develops new or improved statistical methods, quantitative models for analyses and projections and conceptual statistical frameworks.
- Provides guidance and advice to other departments, field experts, etc., in the planning, operation and evaluation of statistical programmes and projects.
- Plans and coordinates seminars, workshops, expert meetings, etc..
- Plans, organizes, manages and supervises the work of the section assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data related to trade and development is required.

Experience in statistical capacity development of developing countries is desirable.

Peer reviewed publications in journals or other official publications is desirable.

Expertise in SAS and/or R is desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Subsequent to the initial temporary appointment, new and successive temporary appointments may be granted for service in the same office or in a different office any number of times, for any duration, provided that the length of service does not exceed the period of 364 calendar days.
