This position is located within the Support and Sharing Section (SSS) of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under International Law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (Mechanism). SSS coordinates cooperation agreement negotiations and support to competent jurisdictions through the facilitation of ongoing investigations and prosecutions. The incumbent will be under the overall supervision of the SSS Senior Legal Officer and under the direct supervision of a P-4-Investigator.

**Responsibilities**:
Within delegated authority and as necessary, the Investigator will be responsible for the following duties:

- Participates in a team of investigators and coordinates investigative activities;
- Plans, organizes, conducts and manages investigations of cases of alleged violations of international humanitarian law and international criminal law;
- Searches for, gathers, records and preserves all potential or relevant evidences, including in electronic format, ensuring that all necessary evidence chains are established and maintained;
- Assists national judicial authorities with investigative and prosecutorial activities, including by conducting interviews and obtaining statements; analyzes information;
- Identifies, engages and manages relationships with a diverse range of sources, including intermediary NGOs;
- Participates in briefings and conferences with investigation staff, other members of the Mechanism, as well as external actors, including judicial authorities and civil society actors;
- Directs and conducts incident response activities. Undertakes or oversees pre-response preparation, reception and recording of incident information, informing appropriate persons/offices during and after response, planning for response, and deployment to and control of the incident scene; preservation of evidence and hand-over of the scene to authoritative persons;
- Implements and maintains established procedures to ensure professional competency and completeness throughout the investigation process;
- Develops or contributes to the development of processes to meet the investigation needs;
- Prepares complete and concise investigation reports and conducts post investigation tasks;
- Works collaboratively and in coordination with colleagues to achieve organizational goals in accordance with standard operating procedures and in compliance with organizational regulations and rules;
- Performs other duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in law, international law, criminal investigation, police studies or related fields is required. A combination of a first-level university degree in the aforementioned field together with formal qualifications and/or certifications in investigations (military, police, federal/national intelligence agencies) and two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Formal qualifications and/or certifications in Investigations (pursuant to a course of study, training and examinations of a state/national law enforcement institution, a national military academy or a federal/national intelligence service training institution, supplemented with professional development courses and/or certifications involving study, training and examinations in investigatory work) in combination with four additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the first-level university degree.

Work Experience

Experience with international investigation activities is required.

Experience carrying out investigations of violations of international human rights law, international humanitarian law or international criminal law is desirable.

Investigative experience with a national war crimes or counter-terrorism unit, international criminal justice mechanism or a UN investigative body is desirable.

Investigative experience in or on the Middle East region is
