- Digital and computational law are thriving fields: From the analysis of how automation is changing our daily lives and requires new regulations to address challenges that have emerged, to new data-driven methods that can be applied to better understand, evaluate, and implement legal and administrative processes. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has likewise led to ongoing discussions on how to strike a balance between fostering AI innovation and mitigating associated societal risks.- Digital and computational law are not only thriving fields, but also inherently interdisciplinary and require expertise at the intersection of law and technology. It is key to understand the underlying technical processes to evaluate their impact on society and law (e.g., How do platforms recommend (fake) content? What AI tools are used within public administrations? How can we establish governance strategies for trustworthy and responsible AI?). New regulations, targeting data governance, platform regulation, or AI regulation are being put in place to address some of the challenges that persist. Personalization of legally relevant processes (e.g., transparency requirements) and the law itself are being investigated as possible new regulatory strategies. In addition, automating compliance with different laws by encoding certain legal processes is rising with new natural language processing tools that can parse legal documents (e.g., contracts, case law, legislation) and evaluate their content (e.g., flagging unfair clauses in terms, providing individuals with relevant summaries of privacy policies). This shows that automation can also be leveraged to better fulfill certain regulatory goals (e.g., consumer protection, privacy literacy). Policymakers, too, are aware of these transformations and need expertise on how to regulate and leverage automated systems.**Job-related information**:

**Your activities**:

- Your main tasks will relate to conducting the research for your PhD project. Your exact project will be determined in consultation with your supervisors. Within your PhD you are expected to collaborate with researchers from other disciplines and engage with the research community around the globe. Through your PhD research and academic activities (e.g., attending conferences, teaching) you will gain unique expertise at the intersection of law and computer science, understanding how the law shapes and gets shaped by automation. Whether after your PhD you choose a career as a lawyer, a public servant, or an academic, you will be prepared to shape the future digital transformation.**Your profile**:

- We are looking for curious, open-minded, and tech-friendly researchers who want to conduct cutting-edge interdisciplinary work, engage with students, and have a strong team spirit. From a formal point of view, these are the most important skills we are looking for:
- Interest in interdisciplinary research and willingness to learn and step out of your disciplinary comfort zone.
