**Postdoctoral Position in Spatially Fractionated Radiation Therapy**
**100%**:
The Institute of Anatomy of the University of Bern is part of the Faculty of Medicine and has teaching responsibilities in the study programmes of Human Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine. Ten independent but highly collaborative working groups conduct biomedical research in the fields of Didactic Morphology, Developmental Biology and Regeneration, Immunobiology, Lung Biology, Mucociliary Clearance, Micro (angio)-CT, Microscopic Anatomy and Structural Biology, Molecular Neuroinfectiology, Nanotechnology, Angiogenesis, Cancer and Microbeam Radiation Therapy.

**Are you passionate about advancing cancer treatment strategies? Do you want to be part of a dynamic research team at the forefront of radiation oncology? The Djonov group is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking research in the field of Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT).**

MRT is an exciting form of preclinical radiation therapy that delivers spatially fractionated X-rays at significantly higher dose rates compared to hospital-based devices. The focused X-ray beam allows therapeutic doses to be delivered in micrometer-wide beams that deliver high doses (peaks) with regions of low doses (valleys) in between. This unique heterogenous dose distribution has proven effective in treating various solid tumors that are often unresponsive to conventional treatments, while minimizing damage to normal tissue.

The research conducted by the Djonov group aims to understand the mechanisms that govern the effects of MRT in order to accelerate the transition to clinical trials. The group focuses on using MRT to treat melanoma, lung cancer, breast cancer, and liver cancer. Ongoing studies also explore different MRT regimes, combinations of MRT with gold nanoparticles, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. We have recently acquired a state-of-the-art X-ray irradiator capable of delivering ultra-high dose rates for our MRT research at our Institute. Additionally, we collaborate closely with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, and the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne. We have also access to cutting edge imaging equipment, such as, micro and nano CTs, electron microscopes, image mass cytometry, light sheet microscopy, among others.

The key discoveries made by our group in the field of MRT include:

- MRT selectively destroys tumor vasculature.
- MRT induces transient vascular permeability, making it a potential tool for drug delivery.
- MRT enhances the recruitment of immune cells to tumors.

Tasks
- Conducting research with animal tumor models and working with animals.
- Handling and working with cell lines.
- Performing experiments utilizing molecular biology techniques such as PCR, western blot, immunohistochemistry, and FACS analysis (among others).
- Carrying out experiments with a focus on immunology and/or genetics.
- Working with ionizing radiation, including X-rays and/or protons, at both conventional and ultra-high dose rates.
- Drafting proposals to obtain approval for animal experiments.
- Producing scientific publications.

**Requirements**:

- PhD in biology, biochemistry, immunology, radiation biology, genetics or related discipline.
- Experience in preclinical tumor models is a must.
- Experience in immunology is highly desired.
- Experience in bioinformatics is highly desired.
- Experience in genetics is highly desired.
- Experience with spatially fractionated radiation therapy is an asset but not mandatory.
- Proficiency in English as it will be the main language of communication.
- Speaking German is an asset.

We offer
- A postdoctoral position fully funded for 2 years with the possibility of prolongation based on performance.
- The opportunity to run experiments in Europe and at the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne.
- The opportunity to present your results in international conferences.
- The opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary, international, and dynamic team of biologists, physicists, and medical doctors.
- Our institute promotes research in a safe space and welcomes all minorities.
- The University of Bern is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes all individuals who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the institution.
- The University of Bern is committed to support young researchers and offers Initiator Grants and coaching programs among others for postdoctoral researchers.

Interested?

For further details regarding the position, please contact Dr. Cristian Fernandez.

Documents to be included in the Application package are:
1. Curriculum Vitae, with details about previous research experience, including an overview of techniques, methods used, and publications.
2. Letter of Motivation, detailing your interest in and suitability for this postdoctoral position
3. Copy of PhD Degr
