Geneve, Schweiz CERN Vollzeit

**Job Description**:
**Introduction**

Are you an experienced Applied Physicist specialized in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of novel particle detectors for large high-energy physics experiments? Are you interested in joining a small international team of physicists, engineers and technicians to work on one of the most critical subsystems of one of the flagship LHC experiments?

You will join the CERN Experimental Physics (EP) Department to work in the CMS Experiment Systems Group (CMX) Detector Applications (DA) section.

The CMS Experiment is one of the four large experiments of the LHC at CERN. The CMX Group is responsible for ensuring the continued high performance of the present CMS Detector and its infrastructure and also for the design and realisation of Phase II upgrades to the detector, necessary for exploiting the maximum physics potential of CMS during the future High-Luminosity LHC era from about 2029 onwards. The CMS Detector Applications Section (DA) contributes directly to the CMS Tracker, Electromagnetic Calorimeter, High Granularity Calorimeter and Beam Radiation Instrumentation and Luminosity subsystems, and the DA section members share technical knowledge across these projects.

**Functions**

As a member of the BRIL team you will be directly involved in both operations and upgrades, in particular playing a leading role in the design and development of the Phase II upgrades. You will work with a small but dedicated group of people from CERN, Europe and the Americas to develop and test new detectors that must operate efficiently and continuously in the most challenging regions of CMS, that serve to protect the detector from unexpected fluctuations of the LHC beams, as well as measuring the luminosity of the collisions, a critical input to all physics analyses and publications from CMS.

You will:

- Assure the fullest availability and optimal performance of the presently installed CMS BRIL sub-systems for beam radiation, luminosity and machine-induced background measurements.
- Contribute to the understanding and prediction of the CMS prompt and residual radiation environment in the CMS cavern and CMS detector subsystems and support the radiation monitoring for CMS in Phase II.
- Play a leading role in executing the luminosity upgrade strategy for the BRIL project for the High Luminosity era, as defined in the BRIL Technical Design Report, by realising the technical implementation of exploiting CMS data for online luminosity measurements in dedicated data firmware modules embedded in the CMS systems backend electronics or in dedicated luminosity data processing modules.
- Be responsible for actively contributing to the design for the exploitation of the CMS inner tracker for the purpose of luminosity and machine induced background measurements for the Phase II era of the CMS detector.
- Play a leading role in the design, prototyping and construction of the Fast Beams Conditions Monitor, a fully-independent precision luminometer for HL-LHC.
- Be responsible for the BRIL detector laboratory at CERN and in optimising its setup for Phase II detector development.
- Supervise CERN graduates and students.

**Qualifications**:
PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Particle Physics, Particle Detectors, Beam Instrumentation, Radiation Physics or a related field.

**Experience**:
You have experience in:

- developing, constructing, installing and operating detectors.
- working with backend electronics, real time data acquisitions and radiation simulation tools or studies.
- coordinating small teams.
- working effectively with students and other collaborators.

The following will be considered an asset:

- understanding of firmware concepts or a strong willingness to learn.
- luminosity calibration and measurement techniques at the LHC.

**Technical competencies**:

- Simulation, design and development of (part of) particle accelerators.
- Analysis and optimization of detector performance.
- Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam line components.

**Behavioural competencies**:

- Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind; Driving work / projects along and seeing them through to their conclusion.
- Learning and sharing knowledge: sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer; taking steps to expand knowledge in other areas of expertise beyond own field.
- Solving problems: recognizing what is essential; discriminating between important and peripheral information and being able to see the whole picture; finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available; seeking and integrating other points of view when tackling an issue; consulting experts in the field and undertaking benchmarking.
- Setting direction: coordinating activities
