The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the UN Secretariat department responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures that there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort.

This job opening announcement broadcasts internship opportunities within the Information Management Branch (IMB) in Geneva. The work will be done in direct support to the Global Information Management Functional Team (GIFT).

The internships will be based in Geneva, Switzerland, or virtually, and the interns will be under the general guidance and direct supervision of OCHA-Geneva supervisors. The internship is being offered for a maximum period of six (6) months, beginning at a mutually agreed time.

**Responsibilities**:
The internship will directly support efforts towards evidence-based and contextualized situational awareness that informs decisions on humanitarian action. These efforts also seek to ensure that OCHA and the humanitarian system benefit from streamlined data and analysis to inform a rapid, effective, and principled response. This intern will support the multi-disciplinary GIFT team in:

- Creating a structured organizational approach to Situational Awareness. This work will define the role situational awareness plays for OCHA, given its coordination mandate in a changing humanitarian landscape, identifying good field practices from within and outside of the organization, establishing suggested best practices, and elaborating options for OCHA to operationalize them.
- Setting out a regional approach to information management, assessments, and analysis in support of enhanced situational awareness. This work will outline what role information management, assessments, and analysis should play in support of enhanced situational awareness, given OCHA’s coordination mandate in a changing humanitarian landscape. This work will involve organizational and negotiating skills as well as innovative thinking around connectivity, data collection, Geographical Information Systems, and the formation of a regional analysis team.

The intern will benefit from an academic focus on Political Science / International Affairs / History / Anthropology / Sociology majors with strong analytical / research / editing skills. Expertise in qualitative research methods and analysis is desirable. Key characteristics include:
Ability to review, structure qualitative information into specific categories, and summarizing information into analytical reports. Persistence, self-motivation, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication skills and ability to work under pressure are assets for this assignment. Humanitarian and/or research experience is preferable.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Work Experience

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- For this internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
- Knowledge of French is an advantage.
