Functional Head Internal Audit

The purpose of Internal Audit is to assist the Audit & Compliance Committee of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of Novartis in discharging their governance responsibilities by providing independent assurance and advisory on the effectiveness and efficiency of processes and controls that support Novartis in achieving its objectives, identifying, and managing its major risks, and ensuring compliance with applicable policies, laws, and regulations.
Internal Audit can add true value to an organization by providing new insights and perspectives on systems and processes by performing risk-based end-to-end audits, advisories and reviews and highlighting areas where improvements are needed. Aspiration for the IA team is to be a trusted assurance and advisory provider, a talent pool driven by purpose to better support the business in serving our patients.
Your responsibilities will include:
- IA Leadership Team member - supporting the Global Head of Internal Audit in formulating strategies, key projects / initiatives, devising policies and procedures to lead the Novartis Internal Audit function globally.
- A key team player to enable IA to reach the aspiration of being a trusted assurance and advisory provider, a talent pool driven by purpose to better support the business in serving our patients. Be a role model, as an “unbossed/servant” leader, empowering teams, championing innovation, continuous learning, and improvement. Fostering the alignment, cooperation across all IA teams.
- As a LT, shape key communication/reporting to the Audit & Compliance Committee and stakeholders in senior management via quarterly and yearly report documents and presentations regarding significant, recurring and/or emerging issues and lessons learned. Act as a change agent, cultural champion within IA and beyond.
- Maintain effective functional relationships and liaise with defined key stakeholders to understand the business and keep informed about changes in risks facing the business, share information to the department.
- Coordinate activities with relevant risk/2nd line of defense functions, continue the integrated assurance journey.
- Represent IA and manage relationships with relevant senior management / stakeholders (inside as well as outside of Novartis).
- Act as an “unbossed” leader of a team of 9-11 auditors in the respective functional office (Basel, DUB). Propose short and long-term planning, resource requirements and resource allocation corresponding to assurance priorities, emerging topics/risks.
- Ensure appropriately qualified and experienced resources are in place to deliver the audit plan (incl. guests or external resources (SMEs).
- Recruiting talents with suitable experience and disposition for IA. Develop potential and capacity of direct reports with support and coaching, giving regular feedback, debriefing after assignments and on-the-job performance appraisals.

**Minimum requirements**
What you’ll bring to the role:
- University degree preferably with a scientific/medical background, ideally additional qualification and/or MBA.
- At least 15 years of experience, preferably of which 4 or more years in a consulting/advisory/internal audit managerial role with global teams and with similarly broad scope
- Combined with relevant business experience across the value chain to ensure excellent understanding of R&D and supply chain
- Working experience in a supply chain or R&D role to understand the key risks and needs to act as a trusted business partner
- Successful track record in working across multiple organizational and hierarchical boundaries across the whole organization
- Successful business partnering in an audit or advisory environment within a global matrix organization
- Ability to travel internationally as needed (20-40% travel)
- Fluent in English: oral & written, any other major language desirable
