**Postdoctoral researcher position at the Institute for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Societies (ISNO)**

Tasks
TraIL will provide cutting-edge research on the legal history of labour in Islamicate societies from a longue durée perspective (10th-20th centuries) with a special focus on the relationship between labour and gender in Islamic legal traditions. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to a work package entitled "Women's Work in Islamic Legal Sources". The focus of this work package is on women's labour in Islamic legal sources from the 10th to the 20th century. The postdoctoral researcher will focus on legal practices in particular. The main output of this work package will be a joint monograph by the PI and the postdoctoral researcher on how Muslim jurists discussed women's labour and how women navigated a legal system that circumscribed (in various ways) their means of earning a living. Besides pursuing their own research, the postdoctoral researcher will also participate in weekly project meetings, contribute to the organisation of project activities, conferences and publications, and will be involved in the administration of the project.

A strong publication record is an asset, and this will be assessed based on career stage. Previous experience in the organisation of academic events and editorial experience are also an asset.

The postdoctoral researcher will be hosted at the Institute for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Societies (ISNO) at the University of Bern. The position is funded for three years with the possibility of extension for a further two years in the event of positive evaluation.
