As space exploration advances, the need for seamless communication between robots and astronauts

becomes paramount. Enabling robots to comprehend astronauts' communication, especially focusing on spatial language nuances and conversations in varied contexts is key for enhancing cooperation and efficiency in space missions. The goal of this project is to equip robots with the ability to interpret the tone, intensity, and contextual cues embedded in astronauts' communication to improve the comprehension of spatial language nuances and other linguistic cues for informed decision-making during space missions.

**_ Activities_**: You will take the role of a junior data scientist and explore methods to synchronize rover actions with the subtleties and context of astronaut communication, thereby enhancing the reliability of voice-enabled control of rovers.

**_ Challenges_**: This internship combines multiple domains of machine learning, aiming at enriching traditional NLP techniques with additional speech cues. You will need to find and compare state of the art models, and devise a method to link the NLP and Speech aspects of the project.

This internship will be co-supervised by the **_EPFL Xplore_** team who will bring their real-life experience on working with Rovers.

Objectives:_**
- Build a project plan with the support of the supervisors (ELCA and EPFL Xplore).
- Find or build a relevant dataset (i.e. synthetic data) to support the tests.
- Extract instructions from speech and map them to rover actions.
- Extract speech cues like sentiments and intensity from speech.
- Enrich and tune rover’s actions based on extracted sentiments.
