WSL’s research unit ‘Forest Health and Biotic Interactions’ studies biotic and abiotic factors relevant for the protection of forests and their biological diversity. For a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, we are seeking from

Post-Doc ‘Bird effects on urban tree health’ 60-80% (f/m/d)

You will study bird communities in different urban and peri-urban environments, and the effects of birds on tree-feeding insects and tree pathogens. You will publish your findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences. You will join a small interdisciplinary team of ornithologists, entomologists and molecular biologists at WSL in collaboration with the Swiss Ornithological Institute (Vogelwarte Sempach). The position is based at WSL in Birmensdorf near Zurich.

You have a PhD in biology, ecology, or related fields and previous experience in ornithology. You have a passion for scientific understanding, an interest in bird and urban ecology, and ideally a Swiss qualification for handling birds (e.g., bird ringing). Experience in molecular biology is desirable, and strong skills in statistical data analysis, preferably using R is required. Furthermore, you have a good command of English and a demonstrated ability to write and publish scientific papers. Knowledge of German and/or Italian would be a plus. You are ambitious, used to a high standard of independent, structured, and careful work, and have a high level of self-motivation and good team spirit.
