Google’s projects, like our users, span the globe and require managers to keep the big picture in focus while being able to dive into the unique engineering challenges we face daily. As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you lead complex, multi-disciplinary engineering projects using your engineering expertise. You plan requirements with internal customers and usher projects through the entire project lifecycle. This includes managing project schedules, identifying risks and clearly communicating them to project stakeholders. You’re equally at home explaining your team’s analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical trade-offs in product development with engineers.

Understanding natural language is at the core of Google’s technologies. The Natural Language Understanding (NLU) team in Google Research guides, builds, and innovates methodologies around semantic analysis and representation, syntactic parsing and realization, morphology and lexicon development. Current research focusses on discourse and dialog systems. Our work directly impacts the Assistant, Conversational Search, the Knowledge Graph, as well as other Machine Intelligence research.

As a Program Manager, you will collaborate with (Computational) Linguists and Engineers in NLU/Machine Intelligence to improve existing natural language understanding and natural language generation technologies, and/or to achieve high quality data to train and/or evaluate those systems. You will be in charge of ensuring solid planning, smooth coordination, measurability and timely delivery from NLU subteams, as well as provide process support for data quality assurance and help shaping the current and future linguistics toolchain to accommodate users’ needs and procedures.

**Responsibilities**

- Work closely with (Computational) Linguists and Engineers by providing linguistic expertise and direction for language specific NLU projects.
- Train and evaluate NLU systems by defining evaluation methodologies, evaluation metrics, testing workflow and debugging.
- Analyze data pipeline and design quality control methodology, experiments, implementation and improvements.
- Monitor data acquisition and curation, scheduling to optimize productivity and quality control.
- Analyze current processes, tools and methodologies and implement changes to influence existing operations, as well as to improve productivity and effectiveness, while maintaining quality. Manage large cross-functional projects from conception to delivery.

**Qualifications***:
Minimum qualifications:

- BA/BS degree in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Computer Science or related field or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience with Unix/Linux systems with scripting experience in Shell, Perl or Python.
- Project Management experience with experience defining projects and executing within timelines with multiple stakeholders. Experience with requirement gathering, resource organization, task prioritization, scheduling and achieving goals.
- Ability to travel internationally on a quarterly basis as required.

Preferred qualifications:

- Master’s or PhD degree with experience in Computational Linguistics and NLP multi-group projects.
- Experience in one or more of the following; C, C++, Python or experience with database query languages.
- Familiarity with experimental design, evaluation metrics, research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Independent worker with the ability to effectively operate with flexibility in a fast paced, constantly evolving team environment.
- Team player with exceptional interpersonal and solution-oriented attitude. Creative thinker with strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills - ability to adapt communication to audience.
