- Be proficient on their primary instrument (violin/viola/cello/double bass).

- Have excellent classroom management skills and a good sense of how to pace the class, giving beginner students the time and attention they require while also working towards performances as a group. Since each class only meets once a week for 45 minutes, pacing and a sense of long term direction are essential.

- Maintain good communication with students, staff, administration, and especially parents.
***
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the most suitable resources (print and digital) to use with students. This is helpful to guide students in their practice at home.
***
- Be able to select appropriately challenging concert repertoire well in advance and prepare students to perform with relevant ensemble skills, such as counting and following the cues of the conductor, in addition to basic proficiency on their instruments.

- Have good recruiting skills to enhance the program in lower school and keep students interested in continuing Strings when they go to middle school.
***
- Be able to perform basic instrument repairs.

- Be available to teach on Mondays and Fridays and also plan to attend all professional development or parent/teacher/student conferences that occur on these days.

- This position involves working with Grade 4 and 5 students who have chosen to enroll in string ensemble as part of their lower school music curriculum. Grade 4 students will mostly be beginners, having only selected their instruments at the end of Grade 3. Grade 5 students will mostly come in with one year of experience playing their instrument. Some students opt to take private lessons, although this is not required. Grade 4 students will be expected to perform in one concert per school year, while Grade 5 students will perform twice - once at the end of each semester.****
