The Comprehensive Vaccine Management (CVM) philosophy has evolved beyond periodic Effective Vaccine Management (EVM) assessments and development of country-specific continuous improvement plans (EVM cIPs) to the need for institutionalisation of a culture of continuous improvement by country Expanded Programme for Immunisation (EPI) and its partners. In parallel, the Gavi leadership has mandated adoption of the philosophy of comprehensive management of vaccines, by the Alliance and country EPI, to ensure that the desired outcome of effective and efficient management of vaccines is realised across Gavi-supported countries. Strengthening in-country immunisation supply chain (iSC) management systems end-to-end, leveraging available Gavi funding levers, is a critical success factor for achieving this outcome especially after Covid-19 created stresses and disruptions from which the programs and supply chains emerge to catch up on missed opportunities and targets. CVM aims at prioritising and curating EVM approaches and supply chain transformation initiatives to operationalise Gavi’s Immunisation Supply Chain Strategy 2.0 which further works towards achieving Gavi 5.1 goals of greater coverage and service delivery efficiency through stronger health systems.
With above in mind, the Comprehensive Vaccine Management (CVM) team under the Health Systems & Immunisation Strengthening (HSIS) department takes the responsibility for delivering the CVM mandate. The goal of the CVM team is “To deploy comprehensive vaccine management systems that ensure availability of potent vaccines, when and where they are needed, while reducing avoidable wastage at affordable costs to countries and global stakeholders through efficient supply chains”
The following internship opportunities are available within the HSIS Department, CVM Team:
As we implement this mandate, as part of our Immunisation Supply Chain objectives for the Gavi 5.0 strategic period, there is an urgent need to plan, implement and monitor portfolio-wide country iSC performance at the global level to support decision making and objectively inform technical assistance to be provided to countries. Active monitoring, triangulation and analyses of iSC and programmatic data will help prioritise actions by Secretariat teams and target technical assistance which can lead to predictive and proactive data use. This internship is designed to help with that process.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

Working under the close supervision and support of the Senior manager digitisation of SC to provide data analytics, monitoring & learning support to contribute to the Comprehensive Vaccine Management strengthening efforts for Gavi 5.1 delivery.
The primary responsibilities are to conduct the following:
1. Update country iSC profiles for Gavi priority countries with the largest annual vaccine allocations. Note that similar analyses should be undertaken for countries prioritized for support by the CVM sub-team;
2. Conduct portfolio analysis of SC investments, from all Gavi funding sources, and Technical Assistance (TA) across Gavi’s portfolio of supported countries (Gavi-57);
3. Conduct stock data analysis using a standard template for aggregating stock and consumption data, reported on existing country stock reporting platforms, from national to district levels across Gavi-57 countries for RI and campaign data monthly;
4. Triangulate monthly RI and campaign stock data with country forecasts and available incoming shipments/pipeline data for vaccines and devices to be shared with CP Directors and their teams for further action;
5. Provide monthly stock report to CP team to facilitate deep dive into root causes of emerging stock incidents i.e., stock outs, understock, stock stasis, overstock, and wastage of vaccines and devices from a programmatic perspective to mitigate vaccine insufficiency and/or wastage;
6. Compile data, review reports, develop presentations and present findings to CVM sub-team and HSIS team;
7. Research Gavi priority countries on supply chain initiatives e.g. evolution of EVM scores and investments, digitalisation and traceability and co-author case studies from the perspective of documenting learning and successes;
8. Review JA, situational analysis reports and any relevant partners’ reports to identify countries who have presented triangulation of stock data with vaccine coverage (RI and campaigns), and who have implemented such triangulation dashboards and use such data especially at sub-national level, and prepare country stories in collaboration with DHI focal point;
9. Monitor progress and challenges of Gavi supported countries in implementing HMIS (DHIS2) to collect and use health facility stock data, and map countries progressing with HMIS/eLMIS interoperability, produce country stories on those in collaboration with DHI focal point.
