Mission

The Laboratory of Mechanical Metallurgy (LMM) at EPFL is inviting applications for a position as post-doctoral scientist. This position is supported by a large-scale project (Swiss equivalent to an ERC Advanced Grant funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation) which started in September 2022 with a total duration of 5 years.

Additional responsibilities include participating in exploratory experiments, teaching, notably practicals (“travaux pratiques”) for undergraduate students, supervising student semester projects, and assisting in organizational and operational matters of the laboratory.

Duration: 1 year, renewable for max. 2 years

We are looking for candidates with a top-level academic education and a proven track record in conducting and publishing outstanding research in the field of physical metallurgy. Skills of direct interest include a strong command of metallurgical processing, microstructural characterization, and the mechanical behavior of metallic materials with a particular interest in aluminum alloys and/or the theory and modeling of solidification. Additionally, expertise in, or the capability and eagerness to learn, the following is expected:

  • magnetohydrodynamics and electromagnetism
  • numerical modeling

The motivation and ability to excel in science and teaching are essential. The working language at EPFL is English (fluency in both oral and written expression are essential). Although proficiency in French is not mandatory, it is desirable notably for teaching-related activities.

EPFL is located next to Lake Geneva in a beautiful setting near the city of Lausanne. Salaries and working conditions are internationally competitive.

Eligibility criteria:

The planned starting date for this position is October 1, 2025; however, some flexibility, of a few months at most, exists in this regard.

Applicants are expected to be in the final stage of completing their PhD degree or to have earned their PhD within four years of September 30, 2025.
