Overviewinspire AG is the leading Swiss competence centre for product innovation and advanced manufacturing. As a strategic partner of ETH Zürich, our mission is to transfer knowledge and technology from research to Swiss machine, electrical and metal industries. The research group Machining Processes and EDM at inspire offers in collaboration with the Chair of Artificial Intelligence in Mechanics and Manufacturing at ETH Zürich.Project backgroundOur research group performs research on cutting, grinding, EDM, and simulation. We develop and refine manufacturing technologies, aiming to enhance machining processes using state-of-the-art equipment and modelling.This position offers the chance to advance cutting-edge research in manufacturing. You will develop and optimise cutting processes using modelling, AI, automation, and laser-structured tools in close collaboration with industry.ResponsibilitiesDevelop hybrid cutting models integrating physical knowledge with experimental and simulated data, leveraging AI and machine learning techniquesContribute to novel computational optimisation methods for machining processesDevelop and implement automation solutions, including computer vision, robotics, and sensing systems for tool assessmentDesign, conduct, and analyse cutting experiments, including setup and operation of measurement equipmentApply advanced laser technologies (e.g. ultra-short pulsed lasers) for precision manufacturing of cutting toolsQualificationsCH/EU/EFTA citizenship or a valid work permit for SwitzerlandMaster’s degree (university) in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related fieldExperience with additive manufacturing and related theoryMaterial characterization (e.g., microscopy, mechanical testing)A good knowledge (written/oral) of English is a must. Knowledge of German is beneficialSoft skillsHighly self-organized and structured way of working and solution orientationHigh motivation and willingness to learn new skillsHigh level of teamwork, positive work attitude and creativityWillingness to supervise and support student projectsWorkplaceWe offerWe offer a full-time position for a researcher, with the option to do a PhD thesis at ETH.
