DURATION: 4 years, starting on 18 August 2025 (contract), 15 September 2025 (program)
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 15 January 2025
The PhD student will write a doctoral dissertation broadly within the themes of the project The Role of Corporate Internal Carbon Pricing in Climate-Change Mitigation Policy – funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) – under the direction of Prof. Ugo Panizza (https://www.upanizza.com/) and in collaboration with Prof. Julien Daubanes (https://www.jxdaubanes.com/). In addition, the student will support Prof. Panizza as a research assistant (RA) within the framework of this project. See brief project description below.
The student will join the PhD program of the Department of International Economics at the Geneva Graduate Institute. The first year consists of coursework – mostly completed within the Swiss Program for Beginning Doctoral Students in Economics at the Studienzentrum Gerzensee (see here) – while the subsequent years are devoted to research.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The objective of this project is to explore why firms voluntarily internalize the cost of their CO2 emissions through internal carbon pricing (ICP) and how public policy can leverage this behavior for societal benefit. While evidence suggests that ICP is linked to lower carbon emissions, the project seeks to test whether ICP has a causal effect on emissions and understand why firms adopt practices that may conflict with short-term profit maximization.
The initial phase will develop models to generate testable implications for guiding empirical analysis. Next, the project will investigate the causal relationship between ICP and carbon emissions and assess whether ICP adoption enhances efficiency during the transition to net-zero emissions, reflected in market valuation. Finally, it will propose fiscal policies to incentivize ICP adoption by large firms.
Students who also have an interest in international macroeconomics and sovereign debt will be welcome (but have no obligation) to join some of professor’s Panizza projects in this field.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applications for this position should be submitted via the regular applications procedure for the PhD in Economics (see here), whereby applicants should reference this particular position and the project in the application form, motivational letter and thesis proposal. The application deadline is 15 January 2025. Interviews (online or in-person) with candidates shortlisted for the position will take place soon after the evaluation of the application packages.
For further information and informal inquiries, please contact Prof. Panizza directly under ugo.panizza@graduateinstitute.ch. No application will be processed or read if it does not go through our recruitment portal as requested.
