Franciscans International is an international non-governmental organization, in general consultative status with the United Nations, working for the promotion and protection of human rights. Since its establishment in 1989, FI has used advocacy as a tool to combat and address human rights abuses. FI relies on the expertise and first-hand information of a large network of partners, including Franciscans working with the most marginalized and disadvantaged individuals and groups in societies. From its offices in Geneva and New York, FI works with grassroots movements and national and international civil society organizations to advocate for structural changes addressing the root causes of injustice. FI promotes human rights at the heart of all policies and processes in development, environment, and peace.

Franciscans International is offering one internship position from February to May 2025.

The intern will work closely with the Advocacy Team of Franciscans International, contributing to our work across our four regional programs and our global program. FI covers a wide range of human rights issues including environmental justice, business and human rights, migration, and accountability for grave human rights violations. The intern will have an opportunity to learn about the functioning of a human rights advocacy organization, from a faith perspective, meet with partners from our priority countries, and participate in UN mechanisms and meetings.

Responsibilities:
  • Assisting in researching, drafting, and proof-reading reports and documentation in English and French to various UN human rights mechanisms.
  • Assisting with the preparation and monitoring of the UN Human Rights Council, Universal Periodic Review (UPR), and Human Rights Treaty Body sessions.
  • Contributing to ongoing FI research projects and advocacy that might include submission for UPR, Human Rights Treaty Bodies; statement at the UN Human Rights Council or any other relevant research.
  • Providing support in the organization of workshops and development of training materials.
  • Any other assistance to the advocacy team.
Candidate profile and other requirements:
  • Written and oral fluency in English is mandatory and French or Spanish will be beneficial.
  • Proficiency in research, reporting, and legal and policy analysis.
  • Motivation to pursue a career in human rights.
  • Some knowledge or experience of UN human rights mechanisms.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work under pressure and prioritize tasks.
  • Able to adapt to various situations (flexibility and adaptability in a multicultural environment), highly motivated and dynamic.
  • Capable of working both autonomously and in a team.
  • Enrolled in a bachelor’s or graduate program at the time of application in one of the following fields: human rights, international relations, international law, or international development.
  • Valid Swiss residency or permit for the internship period.

  • Monetary compensation - 700 CHF per month.
  • Working time: 37.5 hours a week for a full-time position (in-person).
