Job Description

As part of the Beam Instrumentation group, you will develop and refine your electronics skills, collaborating with experts from around the globe on cutting-edge projects that measure and control powerful particle beams. You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes. The position will be in the Beam Position Measurement Section of the Beam Instrumentation Group.

As an electronics technician, you will:

  1. Participate in the test and measurement of tunnel and surface based modules in the various CERN accelerators including the large hadron collider (LHC);
  2. Design test benches comprising laboratory instrumentation and custom electronics;
  3. Design and layout printed circuit boards;
  4. Use advanced instruments such as high-end oscilloscopes, VNAs, logic analysers;
  5. Develop python scripts for the control of laboratory instruments and test benches.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics or a related field.

Experience:

Required experience with:

  1. Hands-on experience in soldering of SMD components;
  2. Hands-on experience with the use of laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, multimeters and power supplies;
  3. Reading electronic schematics;
  4. Fault identification in electronic circuits.

Desired experience with:

  1. Knowledge of CAD software such as Altium or KiCad;
  2. Knowledge of Python;

Technical competencies:

  1. Testing and measurement of analog and digital electronic circuits;
  2. Design and simulation of analog and digital electronic circuits;
  3. Layout of electronic circuit boards;
  4. Design and development of systems based on standardized modules;
  5. Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

  1. Interventions in underground installations.
  2. A valid driving licence.
  3. Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  4. Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
