The World Health Organization (WHO) began when our Constitution came into force on 7 April 1948. We are now more than 7000 people from over 150 countries working in 150 country offices, in 6 regional offices, and at our headquarters in Geneva.
Our primary role is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations system. Our main areas of work include health systems, health through the life-course, noncommunicable and communicable diseases, preparedness, surveillance and response, and corporate services.
We support countries as they coordinate efforts of governments and partners, including bi- and multilaterals, funds and foundations, civil society organizations, and the private sector.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
- Provide technical support to the work programme in promoting equitable global health research and reforming ethics oversight.
- Research, compile, and evaluate data related to Ethics Research policy and practice.
- Develop and monitor work plans and budgets, and follow up on the implementation of planned activities.
- Conduct capacity strengthening in equitable global health research and ethics oversight.
- Provide technical and managerial support for working groups developing recommendations, guidance, and training materials.
- Manage monitoring and evaluation of key performance indicators and reporting requirements.
- Support the development of the Unit's normative documents and tools in research ethics and Ethics2Policy.
- Contribute to the development of strategies and policies for supporting National Ethics Commissions/Committees.
- Serve as a technical resource regarding promoting equitable global health research and reforming ethics oversight.
- Represent WHO at various meetings.
- Review and ensure quality assurance of contractual engagements with partners and institutions.
- Maintain liaison and coordination with technical departments in the Regional Office and HQ.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential: An advanced university degree (Masters level or above) in social, behavioral, or medical sciences related to the functions of the position.
Desirable: A PhD in one of the above-mentioned fields.
Experience
- A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in the management of bioethics and research ethics.
- Demonstrated exposure at the international level.
- Experience working with other UN agencies.

- Good skills in mobilizing resources.

Use of Language Skills
Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of French and other WHO languages.
REMUNERATION
WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for this position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 77,326, a variable post adjustment, and other benefits including 30 days of annual leave.
