In June 2019, the Gavi Board approved a new five-year strategy ('Gavi 5.0') with a vision to 'leave no-one behind with immunisation' and a mission to save lives and protect people's health by increasing equitable and sustainable use of vaccines.

Building on successes of the previous strategic periods Gavi 5.

0 has several key shifts to deliver on its mission, including:

  • A core focus on unreached and underimmunised children with equity as the organising principle;
  • More differentiated, tailored, and targeted approaches for Gavi eligible countries;
  • An increased focus on programmatic sustainability;
  • A stronger emphasis on supporting countries in prioritising vaccine introductions, including COVID 19;
  • Providing limited and catalytic support for select former and never Gavieligible countries.
Gavi has committed to increasing immunisation coverage by supporting countries to overcome gender-related barriers to accessing immunisation services and promoting equity of access for all genders to immunisation and related health services that respond to their different needs

As part of the HSIS, PPMP is the central country-facing team of HSIS, which coordinates closely with its sister teams, EVM (Effective Vaccine Management) and DCG (Demand, Community, and Gender).

PPMP brings together a team of HSS 'Focal Points' (aka Sr Managers Country Health Systems) who participate in and provide technical assistance to country teams, as well as technical area experts (information systems, HRH, digital innovations, evaluation, and learning, etc.)

One of the missions of HSIS/PPMP is to provide technical support to the Gavi Zero Dose Implementation Project (ZIP) in 11 countries.

ZIP is implemented by World Vision (WV) in 7 countries and by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in 4 countries in areas of no or limited access by government services.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

  • After rapid orientation to critical issues for Gavi 5.
0's strategy, the PPMP team, and the role of FPs in country support, the primary responsibilities are to conduct the following:

I. Knowledge management and Country Programs Portfolio Analysis (40% LOE)
Support PPMP country facing work.

Based on priorities established at onset of the internship, the intern will advance analysis of immunisation systems strengthening strategies and financing at country level, with a focus on advances in equity (zero dose) and coverage in relation to the 5.0 key shifts including gender and demand.

In coordination with relevant SMEs, s/he will produce, summarise, and present actionable information informing Gavi, HSIS, and PPMP's HSS approach, most notably on equity approaches in systems strengthening (HSS stories, portfolio analyses, etc.)

Deliverables will be defined as part of initial work planning, and will include short reports, shared tools, summary analyses, presentation, and process recommendations.


II. Support knowledge management and learning in programmatic areas of ZIP (40% LOE)

The intern will work closely with the FP Point of Contact in the Gavi ZIP management team to facilitate coordination and knowledge management with the FPs supporting the 2 implementers (WV and IRC) and 7 countries (Horn of Africa and Sahel), with a view of building efficient processes (and tools) to ease work processes and reduce FP overload.

Support communication and collaboration between FPs and SMEs in EIP sub-team on special initiatives such as in DHI, Demand, Gender, Community engagement and ZD.


III. Support to PPMP coordination and shared information (10% LOE)

  • Work across the PPMP Team under guidance from the PPMP Team Head, to support coordination, and information flows. This may include support/contribution to the development of an HSIS monitoring and learning plan based on TOClinked indicators of FPP countries (with guidance from the PMP Head, HSIS/PPMP lead for M&L, SMEs when relevant and Focal Points);
  • Other duties based on the department needs.
