At the Bergmann Lab (unil/dbc/research-group), we aim to translate the wealth of large-scale biomedical data into new insights helping the early diagnosis or potential treatment of diseases.

Within our SNF-funded Sinergia project our goal is to extend our knowledge of vascular properties by studying medical images from the retina and other organs, through cross-organ comparison and by linking them to genetic and medical information.

We explore if this newly derived information can be used to enhance early detection of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the leading cause of death in developed countries.

Your responsibilities:

  • Develop cuttingedge statistical and machine learning methods that derive features from medical images to infer upon disease
  • Explore data from existing databases (e.g., the UK biobank) to formulate testable hypotheses
  • Communicate results with impactful publications and presentations
  • Collaborate with ophthalmologist and deep learning experts within our Sinergia consortium to coordinate the direction of research projects
  • Contribute to teaching and mentoring of Master students

Your qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Physics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, or Computer Science (we also encourage those with a degree in the life sciences to apply, if they have a strong knowledge of statistics or machine learning)
  • Strong Python and/or R skills
  • Proficiency in data visualization
  • Ability to formulate hypotheses, draw conclusions, and deliver results
  • Ability to communicate findings and results via posters, presentations, and manuscripts
