Call for PhD scholarship in the project "Turning land into capital" :
In the Volkswagen Foundation-funded research project "Turning Land into Capital.

Historical Periods of the (Re-)Production of Wealth in Latin America from the 19th to the 21st Century", we offer an excellent opportunity to pursue a PhD within a network of four universities in Latin America as well as the Universities of Bern and Bielefeld.


The project "Turning Land into Capital" aims to understand the role of land as a means of (re)producing wealth in Latin America and the Caribbean.

It focuses particularly on the two historical periods from the 1860s to the Great Depression of 1929 and from the 1980s to the 2020s.

The project is aligned along three thematic lines of research: 1) Political Constellations; 2) Cultures of Wealth; and 3) Ecological Transformations of Landscapes.
The position is based at the University of Bern.

Scholarship requirements

  • Career and scientific reputation, publications, experience in the research topic and the quality of the submitted project will be evaluated.
  • Fellows are expected to reside in Bern for the duration of the fellowship and to participate fulltime in the activities and events of the "Turning land into capital" project in its various regional offices: Puebla, Quito, Niteroi, Buenos Aires, Bern and Bielefeld.
  • Access to the resources of the project and the host institution, the University of Bern, including office space, access to libraries and research facilities.
  • A small research travel fund for work in libraries and archives is included.
  • Fellows are expected to submit a manuscript on the given research topic with their own innovative perspective. The appropriate form of publication will be determined in consultation with the Project Coordinating Committee.
  • In addition, fellows are expected to submit an annual report on their activities according to the guidelines of the Volkswagen Foundation.
Application

  • Motivation letter explaining how the project relates to the objective and axes of the project "Turning land into capital" and what are your expectations.
  • Presentation of an innovative publication project (essay), justification of the contribution to the debate on the role of land as a means of (re)production of wealth from a multidimensional approach, including timeline and work plan, with a maximum of 10 bibliographic sources (max. 5 pages/2,000 words).
  • Twopage curriculum vitae with list of relevant publications.
  • Copy of master degree.
