The Wyss Academy for Nature at the University of Bern brings together scientists, business leaders, policymakers, and communities to co-design innovative solutions to pressing problems such as climate change, biodiversity loss, land use change, and rising inequality.

Our vision is to achieve a just and sustainable world in which nature conservation and human wellbeing reinforce each other.

To this end, our evolving institution - comprising four Regional Stewardship Hubs, in Europe, South America, East Africa and Southeast Asia - connects innovative and creative minds to research, develop, implement, and empower technical, social, economic, institutional, and policy innovations at the interface of nature and people.

Tasks

They will conduct a PhD within Work Package 3 on "Impact chains: Connecting flows with social-ecological outcomes" South-East Asia.

The PhD research will focus on how global conservation policy affects BES and their values, as well as social equity outcomes through a case study in northern Laos.

Changes in underlying BES values and equity perceptions will be assessed through structured surveys and semi-structured interviews as a proxy to analyze outcomes from telecoupled flows.

Moreover, methods such as process tracing will be used to (re)construct impact pathways.

Concrete tasks:

  • Design a mixedmethods approach to assess BES and social equity outcomes.
  • Conduct indepth case study research collecting empirical data in northern Laos
  • Data analysis, publication of research results in peerreviewed scientific articles and presentation in conferences.
  • Participate in overall project activities and research synthesis.

Requirements:

We are seeking a creative and communicative team player working in transdisciplinary research processes.

You have lived and preferably worked in a country of the Global South and a strong interest in the topics of conservation policy and impacts.

You are driven to explore and develop new ways of transforming knowledge into action that benefits both people and nature and supports systems transformation.

You are experienced with collecting empirical data through social science methods and familiar with participatory approaches.

Not only are you a culturally sensitive personality and used to working and delivering under tight deadlines but also, you are well-structured and at the same time flexible enough to adapt to a dynamic and changing environment.


Sought qualifications:

  • MSc relevant to the relationship between nature and people (e.g. Geography, Sustainable Development, Environmental Science, Conservation Science or similar)
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English both written and oral, knowledge of German and/or Spanish and/or Portuguese are an asset
