The Department of Biomedicine is a joint effort between the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel.

It unites basic and clinical scientists to advance our understanding of health and disease and to develop pioneering therapies benefiting the lives of patients in areas of unmet need.


With more than 70 research groups and 900 employees, the Department of Biomedicine is the largest department at the University.

We are located in the heart of Basel at 6 different locations.


More than 300 researchers at the DBM are using ten flow cytometry analysers (six BC CytoFLEX and four BD Fortessas), five cell sorters (four BD FACSAriaIII and one BD FACSMelody), three high-end spectral analysers (Cytek Aurora), imaging cytometer (AMNIS ImageStreamX Mk II) and mass cytometry platform (CyTOF Helios Mass Cytometer and Hyperion Tissue Imager).


In our fast-paced and busy flow cytometry facility, our team of four experienced flow cytometry specialists delivers operator-performed cell sorting, instrument operation training, experimental design advice and data analysis assistance.

We organise expert seminars and workshops, lectures and instruments' demos, and collaborate with the vibrant Swiss flow cytometry community to keep abreast of the advancements in our fast-developing field.


We are looking for a Head of Facility / Expert in Cell Sorting and Flow Cytometry (100%) from January 2024 or by agreement (the position is limited to one year with possible extension)

Your position

  • Handson monitoring, calibration and maintenance of the cytometers: regular checking of device performance and regular maintenance of devices
  • Performs handson cell sorting, troubleshooting
  • Coordination of the daytoday running of the facility and planning of the future activities
  • Coordination of the teaching and training activities of the facility
  • Planning personal and professional development activities for staff (trainings, conferences)
  • Training and supervision of Senior Flow Cytometry Specialists
  • Handson operation of multilaser, highspeed cell sorters (currently 1 BD Influx and 4 BD FACSAria) and supervision of useroperated BD FACSMelody
  • Instruction and supervision of users operating flow analyzers (4 BD LSRFortessa, 6 BC Cytoflex, 3 Cytek Aurora, 1 ImageStream)
  • Providing expert advice in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of results

Your profile

  • Deep theoretical knowledge of Flow Cytometry and handson experience in cell sorting
  • Experience in maintenance and QC (calibration) of flow cytometry instrument
  • Experience in troubleshooting flow cytometry equipment
  • Experience in teaching and training researchers at different levels
  • Technical and engineering expertise

Excellent communication skills in written and spoken scientific English:

  • Several years of hands-on experience and expertise in high end sorting with a variety of cell types and experimental systems (experience with FACSAria required; experience with BD Influx is a plus)
  • A flexible schedule and effective organization skills are mandatory
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
