Bern, Bern, Schweiz Universität Bern Vollzeit

The goal of the position is to support and prepare for the reduction and analysis of data from the BepiColombo Laser Altimeter (BELA) experiment which will arrive at Mercury towards the end of 2025.

This position is fully funded for three years and will cover orbit insertion and the initial part of the primary science phase.

WP is the leading planetary sciences institute in Switzerland.

Two experimental groups are led by Nicolas Thomas (remote sensing experiments) and Peter Wurz (in situ neutral and ion mass spectrometers).

These groups focus on the development of novel experiments for flight on the spacecraft missions of several agencies such as ESA (the European Space Agency) and NASA.

The remote sensing experiments provide access to information about the surfaces and interiors of planets, planetary satellites and small bodies.

The mass spectrometers are used to determine the composition of planetary atmospheres, planetary and satellite exospheres, cometary outgassing and interstellar gas.

These two fields provide input to the theoretical team, led by Christoph Mordasini, which models aspects of the observations and places them in the context of their implications for the formation, evolution and habitability of our and other solar systems.

The Division is engaged in developing, building and operating hardware for ESA's BepiColombo mission to Mercury (BELA, Strofio), Trace Gas Orbiter (CaSSIS), CHEOPS, PLATO, JUICE (PEP/NIM) and Comet Interceptor (CoCa, MANiaC) missions.

The position offered is to support the preparation for and analysis of the first data from the BepiColombo Laser Altimeter (BELA) experiment during its primary science phase.

The spacecraft is currently in-flight and will arrive at Mercury at the end of 2025.

Based on knowledge of the instrument and the previous work on use of BELA products, the successful applicant will establish optimum data acquisition and analysis procedures to derive results rapidly from the initial phases of the mission.

The applicant will support the operation of the instrument, participate in operational planning, assess the scientific performance, and support in-flight calibration activities.

Collaboration with our partners in Germany (DLR) and Spain (IAA) is expected and collaboration with other institutes (e.g. Italy (OAPD)) on integrating BELA data with the data from other instruments will be strongly encouraged.

The position offers the possibility of taking a leading role in the analysis of data from one of ESA's leading missions of the next decade.

The Division offers an excellent working environment with laboratory space if required. Some support of teaching (supervision of practicals etc.) is expected. Consideration of language capabilities will, of course, be made.

The salary is in accordance with cantonal guidelines (13 months per annum). The Canton of Bern offers 25 days holiday per year (which increases with seniority). Public holidays (e.g. Christmas, New Year, Easter, 1 August, etc.) come on top.
