The Position

Our Global Internship Programme in Innovation & Sustainability #IP2TIS offers a unique opportunity for passionate individuals to gain hands-on experience in the pharmaceutical industry while making a positive impact on the world. As a sustainability and innovation intern, you will work on cutting-edge projects that align with our commitment to environmental responsibility, social impact, and forward-thinking solutions.

You will be working in the Roche Diagnostics Product Sustainability and Compliance (PS&C) team. We partner with the business to push innovation in environmental sustainability and ensure transparency & effectiveness of product environmental compliance activities using data insights. This will provide you with the experience of working in a cross-functional and international team where inclusion and diversity are highly valued.

The purpose of the project is to create a carbon footprint database of Roche chemicals. The scope of work will include the selection of most purchased chemicals and the analysis of commercial environmental databases (e.g. Ecoinvent), supplier product carbon footprints and other sources (e.g. scientific papers, research tools, proxies) to assign carbon emission factors. The list of chemicals and carbon factors will be compiled in a database that will support the development of more accurate Roche product Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and the transition from spend-based to activity-based in corporate carbon reporting. The project will also promote the incorporation of carbon footprint data into the EH&S database in SAP.

You will be supervised by the Roche Life Cycle Assessment Lead, who will enable you to learn about product environmental footprint analysis and carbon accounting, essential for a future career in sustainability. Additionally, you will collaborate with experts across Roche, such as the procurement team or chemical experts. 

This internship position is located in Rotkreuz, hybrid.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on environmental databases, tools and other resources to assign carbon emission factors for most purchased chemicals. 

  • Application of chemistry expertise and engagement with experts to identify emission factor proxies for chemicals that cannot be found in available resources.

  • Compile a comprehensive carbon footprint database for chemicals.

  • Engagement with procurement and data teams to promote the application of the new database to improve accuracy in measuring chemicals carbon footprint.

Who You Are

 

You are enrolled or have completed your Master’s studies at a university, preferably in the field of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Environmental Science or Material Science within the last 12 months and are interested in applying your knowledge in a modern working environment as part of an internship of at least 3 months and getting to know the pharmaceutical industry.

Furthermore you are 

  • Knowledgeable in basic chemistry.

  • Experienced in using Google Sheets for data analysis and have the ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Knowledgeable in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a plus but not a requirement. 

  • A proactive team player who contributes to decisions about the project, but who can work independently.

  • A confident communicator with excellent English language skills and who is passionate about driving sustainability initiatives forward.
