The GICHD Standards and Operations Division supports partners in several areas. We focus on the codification of global good practices and locally relevant requirements to ensure safer, more effective, and efficient operations. Our goal is to support the development of standardized guidelines that improve operational safety and efficiency. The division assists partners in developing, promoting, and enhancing safer, more efficient, and effective mine action management systems. These efforts are guided by normative frameworks, regulations, policies, standards, and best practices, addressing needs at global, regional, and national levels. Additionally, the Research and Innovation program within the division supports the identification, research, and analysis of innovative methods and technologies. We promote further development through partnerships, dialogue, and cooperation, and we share good practices through studies, publications, and conferences.

The purpose of the role is to Implement and monitor activities within Mine Action in collaboration with other divisions in line with GICHD’s strategy. The Advisor will provide technical assistance including on assessments, systems/tools, training/workshops, research/ publications.

 Key responsibilities

  1. Advise partners in the thematic area of expertise, understanding their needs, priorities, challenges, and supporting them in developing and implementing norms, policies, tools, tools, procedures, good practices and methodologies. 
  2. Contribute to the development of the relevant thematic activities as assigned by line manager.
  3. Plan and deliver GICHD’s activities as assigned by line manager.
  4. Under supervision, conduct assessments, facilitate workshops and provide consultation remotely and onsite.
  5. Contribute to designing, developing and maintaining training materials as well as delivering training sessions.
  6. When requested by line manager, represent the GICHD by participating and presenting at conferences, meetings, workshops and through other outreach activities.
  7. Contribute to the preparation of project budgets, monitor and analyse budgets and expenditures under supervision.
  8. Conduct research and support the production of studies, articles, and briefs.
  9. Actively contribute the reporting based on the Results Based Management (RBM) system.
  10. Contribute to designing, implementing and maintaining relevant systems and tools. 

 Qualifications and professional experience

  • Master’s degree in the relevant field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of previous relevant work experience in Mine Action and/or disarmament or any equivalent experience in the humanitarian or development sector.
  • Demonstrated qualifications/experience in developing standards, guidelines, or Standing Operating Procedures or conducting research, or managing training.

 Knowledge, skills and competencies

  • Fluency in English, both written and oral; fluency in Arabic or French is an asset.
  • Excellent project management, analytical, planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to coordinate simultaneous activities/projects.
  • Effective verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural settings with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of UN agencies, relevant national authorities , NGOs and humanitarian organisations.

Travel requirements

  • Expected to travel up to 30% of the working time including to countries affected by explosive ordnance.

Salary Information

Please note that the salary level for this role is CHF 106'881.- yearly gross, subject to social security deductions and income tax.
