As an applied physicist or engineer with sustained expertise in particle accelerator technologies and international collaborations, you will take responsibility for the definition, setting-up and coordination of collaborative projects for research and innovation in the field of particle accelerators and their applications. These include different initiatives within the Research and Innovation Framework Programmes of the European Commission, or those supported by national or international funding with CERN participation.

Functions

You will:

  • Identify strategic directions for the development of accelerator technologies, in close collaboration with CERN Management and international partners, following the guidelines defined by the European Strategy for Particle Physics and relevant bodies for accelerator research (e.g.TIARA);
  • Prepare proposals and agreements for collaborative projects based on established strategic directions, involving the CERN Accelerator and Technology Sector (ATS) and the broader Particle Accelerator R&D community, negotiating internally and with multiple international stakeholders such as research institutes and industry, actively using formal and informal networks;
  • Establish and coordinate international collaborations, secure funding, and lead projects on accelerator technologies, including long-term sustainability of particle accelerator-based research and the new societal applications of accelerators;
  • Advise CERN’s Accelerator and Technology Sector (ATS) on opportunities for EU-funded projects for accelerator technologies, liaising with the CERN EU Office, and supporting the preparation of proposals.

You will also:

  • Identify and develop applications of CERN accelerator technology for societal benefit, with a focus on medical fields;
  • Facilitate international collaborations by liaising between ATS and CERN International Relations;
  • Represent CERN at conferences, workshops, and research institutions.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of applied physics or engineering or a related field.

Experience:

Required experience:

  • Significant experience in leading and coordinating large-scale collaborations in accelerator technology development, new accelerator designs, and concepts;
  • Proven experience in managing Research and Innovation projects funded by the European Commission;
  • Demonstrated experience in international scientific collaborations, managing complex research activities, and coordinating contributions from various institutes and industries.

Desired experience:

  • Experience in transferring particle accelerator technology to societal applications, particularly in medicine;
  • Experience in negotiation and collaboration with industry.

Technical competencies:

  • Project management, including knowledge of the procedures and processes applicable to EU-funded research and innovation projects;
  • Contract management, including knowledge of the procedures for large industrial contracts and for collaboration with industry;
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the key technologies used in particle accelerators.

  • Communicating effectively: leveraging support networks across the Organization; utilising effective negotiation techniques to achieve long-term results acceptable to all parties involved.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English: ability to speak in professional contexts as well as to draft texts for publications and/or official communications.
  • Ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts, or willingness to acquire it rapidly.
