About the role

Join the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands – the first global environmental treaty dedicated to conserving one of the planet's most critical ecosystems: wetlands. As
Senior Advisor for the Americas
, you will provide expert support to Contracting Parties, facilitate cooperation, and help advance the implementation of the Convention across North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

This role offers the opportunity to work at regional and global levels on key thematic issues, strengthen partnerships, and contribute to the conservation and wise use of wetlands – ecosystems vital for biodiversity, water security, and climate resilience.

Key responsibilities

  • Thematic Leadership:
    Serve as the Secretariat's focal point for specific thematic areas, providing guidance and coordinating activities aligned with Resolutions adopted by the Conference of the Parties.
  • Regional Engagement:
    Act as the primary contact for Contracting Parties in the Americas, advise on implementation, and lead technical missions including Ramsar Advisory Missions.
  • Cooperation & Support:
    Maintain strategic relationships with government authorities and partners, and encourage accession by countries not yet Parties to the Convention.
  • Resource Mobilisation:
    Contribute to fundraising efforts and develop proposals to support priorities identified by the governing bodies.
  • Management & Coordination:
    Oversee projects, reporting, and staff development as part of the Senior Management Team.

What we are looking for

  • Postgraduate degree in biological, political, or social sciences or economics relevant to wetland conservation.
  • 15+ years' experience in biodiversity and ecosystem-based resource management, with at least 5 years at international level in the Americas.
  • Expertise in wetlands, climate change, water management, and sustainable development policy.
  • Proven experience supporting policy processes in Multilateral Environmental Agreements.
  • Fluency in English; Spanish desirable.
  • Strong organisational, project management, and interpersonal skills in multicultural environments.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally for regional engagement and global meetings.
