Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

Introduction:

Are you an Applied Physicist with a passion for challenging and exciting projects in the field of particle physics experiments? Then seize the opportunity and join the ATLAS group in CERN's Experimental Physics Department (EP) to participate in the integration of the next generation silicon tracker for the ATLAS experiment, the Inner Tracker (ITk). The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in many areas of the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel. Within our team, you will contribute to the integration and commissioning of leading-edge technical solutions for this next generation particle detector.

Functions:

The selected candidate will play an important role in the integration and surface commissioning of the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel for the Phase-II upgrade of the ATLAS experiment. This activity includes the integration and quality control of parts of the Outer Barrel during its construction and installation on surface. It involves the reception test of the components, and the testing and evaluation of the detector parts, as well as the monitoring of the integration progress and implementation of components in the production database. The candidate will install and operate the setup and test infrastructure in the surface laboratory, interface with the different teams involved in the integration of the Outer Barrel and contribute to achieving a fully functional detector.

  • Organisation, planning and control: including supervision of students and technicians.
  • Testing and validation of detector components, including electrical characterisation and quality management of semiconductor detectors.
  • Assembly and operation of infrastructure for detectors.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind; producing comprehensive work / project plans taking into account resources and contingencies.
  • Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities; building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Demonstrating Accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises; presenting information accurately and objectively.
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change; being willing to work on different projects simultaneously; readily absorbing new techniques and working practices; proposing new or improved ways of working.
  • Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented; expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
