Student Assistant: Developing learning exercises in statistics applied to climate risk

The Weather and Climate Risks Group at the Department of Environmental Systems Science engages in research and teaching on climate risks and adaptation. In this project we seek to enhance resources for student learning on statistics and machine learning applied to these topics.

Project background

We would like to develop learning exercises that help students learn how different statistical methods are applied to analytical problems in climate risk and adaptation. Examples should include classical statistical methods and machine learning. The Hilfsassistent:in will identify datasets and papers with open data and code that can serve as a basis for these exercises, then adapt these in jupyter notebooks (python or R) for student learning exercises. The Supervisor will advise on the content and learning design.

Job description
  • Identify papers on climate risk that have openly accessible data and code that could be used for learning exercises
  • In jupyter notebooks, develop exercises designed to help students:
  • Understand the statistical methods that the authors used, the reasons that they chose these, and how they interpret the results
  • Include a variety of statistical methods, including big data and machine learning methods

  • Student of ETHZ or UZH
  • Demontrated competence in statistics, ideally including machine learning and data science
  • Competence coding in R or python
