Genève, Schweiz CERN Vollzeit

**Company Description**
**Job Description** Introduction**

Are you ready to push the boundaries of superconducting magnet technology and contribute to the future of particle accelerators?

The Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group of the Technology Department (TE), has the mandate to design, construct, and measure the superconducting and normal conducting magnets for the CERN accelerator complex; integrate them in the CERN accelerator complex; design the magnet cryostats and perform the magnet quality control. The group also provides support to the operation of the accelerators for magnets, magnet performance and devices.

The Superconducting Magnets Technology (MSC-SMT) section is responsible for advancing high-field magnet technologies for future accelerators. This requires the use of superconducting materials, whose unique electrical and mechanical properties present significant manufacturing challenges, demanding innovative materials, processes, and tools.

**Functions**

As a Mechanical Technician, you will be part of a dedicated team focused on designing, developing, and prototyping small-scale models of CERN's next-generation superconducting magnets. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge accelerator technology and push the boundaries of precision engineering.

Your main responsibilities will include:

- ** Mechanical Workshop and Contractor Coordination**: Managing the mechanical workshop, performing machining operations (e.g., milling, turning on a lathe), coordinating a small team of mechanical technicians, and liaising with internal workshops for subcontracting parts as needed;
- ** Manufacturing and Assembly**:Machining and assembling high-precision mechanical components;
- ** Prototype Development**: Contributing to the design and validation of components, tooling, and assembly processes for model magnet construction. This includes refining components and tooling, using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software.

If you are passionate about precision engineering and hands-on prototyping, this is your chance to take part in innovative projects at the forefront of accelerator technology.
**Qualifications**
Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering, electromechanical engineering or a related field.

**Experience**:
Proven experience in:

- Mechanics, manufacturing techniques, and assembly of complex systems to tight tolerances;
- Computer Aided Design (CAD) software for supporting the refinement of components and tooling;
- Machining operations (e.g., milling, turning on a lathe) and coordinating workshop activities, including subcontracting parts and liaising with external contractors.

Experience in:

- Prototyping and first-of-a-kind development, including constructing of mock-ups and dedicated tooling;
- Inspection, quality control, and testing of mechanical components to ensure compliance with specifications.

**Technical competencies**:

- Manufacturing of mechanical parts;
- Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;
- Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems;
- Reading of 2D drawings and 3D models, including ISO-GPS dimensioning and cabling diagram.

**Behavioural competencies**:

- Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind;
- Demonstrating Accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises;
- Working in Teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information;
- Demonstrating Flexibility: demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change;
- Learning and Sharing Knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information.

**Language skills**:
Spoken and written English or French: fluency in at least one language, ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts, or willingness to acquire it rapidly.
**Additional Information** Eligibility and closing date**:
Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
