Gravis Robotics is a startup that turns heavy construction machines into intelligent and autonomous robots. Our unique combination of learning-based automation and augmented remote control lets one operator safely conduct a fleet of earthmoving machines in a gamified environment. Our team has over a decade of academic experience honing the cutting edge of large-scale robotics, and is rapidly growing to bring that expertise into a trillion dollar industry through active deployments with market leaders.
**About the Job**
We’re seeking a motivated and experienced **Engineering Team Lead** to spearhead the development and certification of safety-critical systems for our robotic platforms. Certification is vital to the global deployment and operational success of our machines, and this role is key to shaping how we meet evolving regulatory standards in a rapidly changing field.
As Engineering Team Lead, you will manage a technically skilled group focused on safety certification, combining strategic oversight with hands-on contributions. You’ll work cross-functionally with hardware, software, and systems teams to identify and mitigate risks, design compliant systems, and implement the changes necessary to meet global safety standards. This role requires a strong balance of engineering leadership and direct technical engagement. Due to the collaborative and leadership nature of this position, regular on-site presence is essential. While hybrid arrangements can be considered, we expect a consistent weekly presence in the office to effectively support team development and coordination.
At Gravis, we believe great engineering happens not just behind a desk but also in the field—yes, literally in the “trenches”. You’ll have the opportunity to visit our testing sites and gain firsthand understanding of how our systems operate in real-world environments and how we can continuously improve and expand our solutions.
This is a rare opportunity to have a tangible impact on the future of autonomous technology for heavy machinery equipment—helping bring safe, certified robotic systems to industries around the world.
**Responsibilities**:
- Lead and grow a team responsible for safety certification efforts, including functional safety analysis, environmental testing, and system verification
- Own and manage Gravis’ internal safety certification roadmap, ensuring alignment with company milestones and product release goals
- Serve as the primary interface with regulatory agencies, certification authorities, and test laboratories
- Drive the development of safety strategies and compliance frameworks that meet or exceed industry standards for autonomous machinery
- Ensure proper documentation, traceability, and retention of certification evidence across the product lifecycle
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and field teams to integrate safety requirements into design, implementation, and testing phases
- Act as a technical leader in areas of prior expertise, supporting your team with practical guidance and mentorship
- Foster a culture of rigorous, safety-first engineering across all teams at Gravis
**Required Qualifications**:
- Relevant past with safety certification processes and regulatory compliance for hardware/software products
- Hands-on experience with functional safety standards, environmental testing, and system-level validation for safety systems
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, or Mechatronics) or equivalent practical experience
- Demonstrated success managing engineering teams or complex technical projects, ideally involving robotics, autonomous systems, or embedded safety systems
- Excellent project management and communication skills—comfortable navigating ambiguity and aligning cross-functional teams around safety-critical goals
**Additional Beneficial Skills**:
- Past experience with autonomous and robotics systems
- Knowledge of the EU Machinery Directive (Directive 2006/42/EC) and related CE conformity assessment practices
- Exposure to cybersecurity standards relevant to safety
- Experience interacting with third-party certifiers, test labs, or regulatory bodies
