Applied Physicist for Fcc-ee Non-linear Correction
vor 3 Wochen
** Your responsibilities**
As an applied physicist, you will join the Linear and Non-Linear Optics Section (LNO) within the Accelerator and Beam Physics Group (ABP) under the Beams Department (BE), where you will be working on FCC-ee non-linear correction circuits.
Recent studies point to nonlinear optics aberrations in the FCC lattice posing a serious challenge to successful design and operation. Correction of high-order nonlinear effects (up to decapole order at least) appears necessary to optimize the DA even of the bare lattice. Additionally, inclusion of even small nonlinear errors also produced sizable reductions in the short-term DA and momentum acceptance, suggesting very tight tolerances on the magnetic errors would be required.
So far, correction schemes for the nonlinear optics have not been addressed. Significant progress in the beam-based measurement and correction of high-order optics aberrations has been achieved in recent years at the LHC.
The goal of this project is:
- Design non-linear corrector packages;
- Demonstrate the beam-based methods with sufficient precision to ensure sufficient Dynamic Aperture and Momentum Acceptance;
- Collaborate on experimental tests that are foreseen to take place in SuperKEKB and LHC.
**Your profile**
**Skills**:
- Beam dynamics knowledge, especially non-linear imperfections and correction strategies;
- Good computing skills;
- Knowledge and experience with Python;
- Knowledge of MADX, Xsuite or similar and experience with tracking simulations;
- Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.
Eligibility criteria:
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- You have a professional background in Applied physicist (or a related field) and have either:
- a **Master's degree with 2 to 6 years** of post-graduation professional experience;
- or a **PhD with no more than 3 years** of post-graduation professional experience.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
**Additional Information**
Job closing date**:18th of November at 23:59 (midnight) CET.**
Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.
Working hours: 40 hours per week
Target start date: 01-January-2025
Job reference: BE-ABP-LNO-2024-180-GRAP
Field of work: Applied Physics
**What we offer**
- A monthly stipend ranging between **6212** and 6828** Swiss Francs per month (net of tax)**.
- Coverage by CERN's comprehensive **health scheme** (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN **Pension Fund**.
- Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
- ** 30 days of paid leave per year**.
- On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
