Head of Legal Trading, Sales

At Alpiq, we are currently looking for a new Head Legal for our Trading and Sales & Origination businesses. This unique leadership role comes with a diverse set of responsibilities and challenges, due to the high complexity of Alpiq’s international energy trading activity and its respective legal requirements and demanding stakeholder management. Of course, the current dynamics of the rapidly changing energy industry add some additional challenges to this role and make it particularly exciting. It manages a local and remote team of in-house counsel and contract managers and is ideal for somebody with previous leadership experience. It reports directly to Alpiq’s General Counsel and should ideally be based in Olten, Switzerland.

**Your main responsibilities**
- Leading and developing a legal team providing efficient, business oriented, risk focused legal support to the Trading and Sales & Origination businesses and on selected corporate topics
- Providing expert legal advice and documentation in areas of power and gas trading, energy supply and related fields
- Optimising and improving processes and ways of working, in collaboration with business & other functions, and streamlining the legal work to ensure efficient use of legal resources and effective risk approach
- Leading and coaching legal team, ensuring high performing team who enjoy their work and grow
- Managing litigation cases
- Providing strategic advice on legal related matters
- Managing relationships with senior stakeholders, including reporting relevant information
- Acting as first and second lines of defense with respect to wider legal risks
- Selecting, managing and using external counsel in a value added and cost efficient manner
- Providing training on legal & contract topics to Trading and Sales & Origination teams

**Your qualifications**
- Qualified lawyer, with good knowledge of the Swiss legal system
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in law firm and in-house, including at least 3 years with leadership and people management experience
- Good understanding of energy markets and trading and related documentation (EFET, ISDA, etc.), energy supply contracts, TSO related documentation, etc.
- Proven track record in leading litigation, M&A, corporate matters, financing
- Experience working across Europe
- Good business acumen and commercial sense
- Experience with change management and performance initiatives
- Personal gravitas and ability to challenge others, ability to find and propose alternative solutions
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, ability to inspire trust and promote cross-functional collaboration
- Fluency in English and German, French of advantage
