PhD research student in River/Restoration Ecology

The PhD position is part of the transdisciplinary research project “Resilient Rivers - Refugia, Connectivity, Stepping Stones” financed by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and with research partners from river engineering (VAW-ETHZ, PL-LCH-EPFL) and terrestrial ecology (WSL). The Resilient Rivers Project aims at assessing the factors that drive the resilience of riverine ecosystems to natural and anthropogenic disturbance, thereby supporting the ecological restoration of rivers as requested by the Swiss Water Protection Act.

**The objective of the PhD research** is to improve the mechanistic, ecological understanding of aquatic refugia, i.e. persistent or temporary habitats where riverine organisms retreat to survive harsh conditions as they prevail during extreme events (e.g. floods, droughts). Despite their important ecological role, refugia have been poorly studied and often neglected in practical management (e.g. river restoration). One aspect of the PhD research is to examine the functional properties (e.g., spatio-temporal availability, accessibility and use) of refugia along a gradient of human impact (e.g. channelized, restored, near-natural). Furthermore, the effects of catchment context and disturbance history on refuge formation and functioning will be studied.

**The position **is financed for four years in the Department of Surface Waters (SURF), and interacting with the Department of Aquatic Ecology (ECO) of Eawag and our partner institutions WSL, VAW-ETHZ, PL-LCH-EPFL and FOEN. Excellent communication skills in English and experience in team work are essential. Working knowledge in German or French is an advantage.
