Job Description

Introduction

The Accelerators and Technology Sector (ATS) is responsible for operating and exploiting the whole accelerator complex, particularly the LHC, and for developing new projects and technologies. The ATS comprises the Beams ("BE"), Engineering (EN), Systems (SY), and Technology (TE) departments.

The EN department provides CERN with the engineering competencies, infrastructure systems and technical coordination required for the design, installation, operation, maintenance and dismantling phases of the CERN accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.

The Accelerator Coordination & Engineering group (ACE) is in charge of coordinating the activities for the interventions and changes to the LHC and its injectors.

The mechanical engineer takes a leading role in the pre-design and 3D integration (a.k.a 3D coordination or spatial integration) of accelerators at CERN including major mechanical components, infrastructure and systems. He/she is also involved in producing and maintaining these 3D integration studies. One of the main current studies is the Future Circular Collider (FCC), which initiates the technical design phase.

The mechanical engineer also takes a leading role in preparing the documentation for the 3D integration studies of which he/she is in charge and for communicating it to all relevant parties, especially the civil engineering service.

The mechanical engineer can lead integration work packages for projects and associated teams of designers.

Functions

As Mechanical Engineer - 3D Integration for Accelerators, in the Engineering (EN) department*, Accelerator Coordination and Engineering (ACE) group, Integration section (INT), you will:

  • Perform 3D integration studies, assembling models from design offices (mechanical, technical infrastructure, civil engineering) ensuring space reserved for transport and survey is available;
  • Prepare and update the work package description of the 3D integration studies on projects for which you will be responsible, defining schedule, budget and resource requirements, establishing a list of tasks and deliverables and monitoring the progress of work;
  • Lead a team of designers for the 3D integration studies of the various FCC configurations (e.g. electron-positron collider, hadron-hadron collider, low and high energy configurations) and/or areas (e.g. underground/surface, sites, etc.);
  • Work in collaboration with the civil engineering service for dimensioning the civil works for surface and underground areas, pre-design or contribute to the design and 3D integration studies of accelerators components, with respect to the infrastructure (e.g. metallic structures, transport and handling components, etc.) and general services (e.g. HVAC, electrical systems, etc.) and produce and/or control drawings;
  • Report and prepare the relevant documentation for reporting on the work packages for which he/she will be responsible;
  • Present the results of the studies during workshops and conferences

You also have proven experience in the field of project management, coordination and supervision of designers.

The following would be considered assets:

  • Experience with CAD software integrating multiple CAD format,
  • Experience in configuration and layout management databases,
  • Knowledge of accelerator components.

Technical competencies:

  • Integration of mechanical systems: (3D spatial integration)
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: applying drawing standards
  • Design and analysis of mechanical structures
  • Organisation, planning and control

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind
  • Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented
  • Solving Problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them
  • Building Relationships: being able to put self in the shoes of others in order to understand their needs and interests
