The British Embassy in Berne is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking for a Residence Intern to join the team. 

The main purpose of job will be to gain experience of working in a high quality environment, and provide hands-on support to the team that manages and runs the official functions of the British Embassy events at the residence of the Ambassador.

Roles and responsibilities:

Working in Service during various events (breakfasts, lunches, dinner functions and large receptions). Preparing rooms, tables, mise en place and serving our official guests.

Assisting the Head of Housekeeping & Service with office administration and deputising for her during absences, working independently

Assisting the Head Chef in the kitchen to prepare for events or administrational tasks

Assisting the Residence team with housekeeping duties and decorations at the Residence

Managing the IT & Sound Systems

Helping with the organisation of our annual King´s Birthday Party Reception with 500 guests in June; sending out invitation, updating guests list etc.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience Fluency at B2 level in English according to CEFR framework*, or equivalent.

Some proven experience of the Hospitality Industry, especially from a hotel or events perspective.

Outgoing and welcoming - being used to dealing with people in a friendly manner.

Having a ‘can do’ attitude and being a “Team Player.

Knowing the basic principles of formal and informal food service - familiar with housekeeping functions, and food preparation standards.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Fluency at B2 level in German and/or French according to CEFR framework*, or equivalent.

To be able to demonstrate more in-depth knowledge of the Hospitality industry, and be willing to pass on their knowledge to the team

This is an Internship contract for 40 working hours per week.

Gross monthly salary is CHF 2190. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Swiss/ UK public holidays per year.

FCDO is committed to continual learning and development. The Embassy will provide funding in line with L&D requirements and a variety of learning and development is provided throughout the year both directly at post and virtually through the FCDO International Academy. There will be opportunities to attend training, lectures etc. on the job.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Swiss employment law.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance.

The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for Switzerland in order to apply. All applicants should have the right to live and work in Switzerland.
