Job Summary

CERN's Infrastructure and Building Safety section is seeking a Fire Safety Engineer to join the Fire Safety Engineering Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting fire risk analysis studies, developing fire safety concepts, and participating in fire safety inspections and commissioning of safety systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct fire risk analysis studies, including advanced fire dynamics and fire safety concepts development for new and existing CERN facilities.
  • Participate in fire safety inspections and commissioning of safety systems, including complex smoke extraction.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of engineers, physicists, and fire officers.

Requirements

  • Strong background in fire dynamics, fire risk assessment, fire prevention, and fire scenarios and human behavior in fire.
  • Knowledge in industrial safety and emergency safety systems, as well as fire resistance and behavior of materials.
  • Knowledge in fire modeling (CFD, as per example FDS). Performance-based design experience will be an asset.
  • Capability to work in an international and multidisciplinary team.
  • Original thinker and problem solver.
  • Fluent in English, with the ability to work in French considered an advantage, or a strong willingness to acquire it rapidly.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in fire safety engineering methods and quantitative fire risk analysis.
  • Knowledge in prescriptive fire safety and regulatory frameworks (i.e. EU, CH, FR, etc).
  • Knowledge of passive and active fire protection solutions (compartmentalization, fire detection, fixed and mobile extinguishing systems, etc).
  • Pro-activity and capacity to work autonomously and effectively on parallel tasks.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • Professional background: You have a professional background in Fire Safety Engineering / Safety Engineering (or a related field) and have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • Previous experience: You have never had a CERN fellowship or graduate contract before.
