About the Role

CERN is seeking a highly skilled Mathematician to join its Geodetic Metrology group. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for developing new alignment methods and tools for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study.

Your primary focus will be on the theoretical aspects related to the statistical data processing of survey data, the development of mathematical concepts, and the proposition of new algorithms responding to the future project needs. You will collaborate with other research teams, both within and outside CERN, to leverage the latest developments in this field.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop innovative measurement techniques and new instruments for the next generation of colliders, incorporating the latest experimental results into mathematical models that accurately describe device and sensor behavior.
  2. Study complex measurement systems combining different techniques and types of instrumentation, establishing corresponding theoretical models, and contributing to optimizing their configuration.
  3. Develop and apply parameter estimation techniques, including least squares, L1 norm minimization, and Huber estimation.
  4. Address future challenges related to large-scale optimization, developing scalable solutions that efficiently handle high-dimensional problems, and proposing innovative solutions for enormous calculations required by simulations.
  5. Design real-time estimation algorithms with a strong focus on speed and efficiency to meet time-sensitive application demands, and implement some of the most promising results from your studies into today's survey data processing workflow.
  6. Present optimization results and insights to various audiences, including surveying engineers, software experts, and non-expert stakeholders, effectively conveying complex mathematical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
