Bern, Bern, Schweiz Universität Bern Vollzeit

The Institute of Plant Sciences at Universität Bern invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to investigate the role of stomatal diversity in climate change resilience in grasses.

Research Group

The Stomatal Biology research group at Universität Bern explores the mechanisms underlying stomatal formation and function in plants. Our group aims to understand how different stomatal forms contribute to gas exchange physiology and how this impacts climate change resilience.

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a completed PhD in biology or a related field to join our team. The successful candidate will work on a project investigating the phenotypic space of stomatal anatomy and function in the wild model grass Brachypodium distachyon. The project involves quantitative phenotyping, genetics, light microscopy, and computational image analysis. Experience in genome-wide association studies, plant physiology, and plant development is a plus.

Responsibilities
  1. Phenotype a natural diversity panel of wild Brachypodium distachyon accessions for differences in stomatal anatomy and function.
  2. Conduct genome-wide association studies to identify genetic players regulating stomatal anatomy and function.
  3. Model photosynthesis and water use based on anatomical parameters to predict water-stress-resilience.
  4. Test different genotypes in future climate scenarios.
Requirements

• PhD in biology or a related field

• Experience in quantitative phenotyping, genetics, light microscopy, and computational image analysis

• Experience in genome-wide association studies, plant physiology, and plant development is a plus

We offer a vibrant and inclusive research environment that strives to answer fundamental questions in plant development and physiology. The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and is in collaboration with Prof. Beni Stocker, Prof. Christelle Robert, and Dr. Anne Roulin.
