About the Role

The U.S. Embassy in Bern seeks a skilled and compassionate Diplomatic Support Specialist to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to work with a diverse group of individuals, providing critical support services to U.S. citizens residing in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Key Responsibilities
  • Welfare Checks: Conduct thorough research and analysis to locate missing persons, assist with children's issues, and provide support for parental child abduction cases.
  • Medical Assistance: Arrange hospital visits, contact family and friends, and facilitate payment and insurance issues for U.S. citizens in need.
  • Financial Assistance / Repatriations: Assist with repatriation loans, travel arrangements, and housing needs for U.S. citizens facing financial difficulties.
  • Deaths: Issue consular reports of death, facilitate return of remains, and provide support for funeral arrangements for U.S. citizens who have passed away abroad.
  • Arrests: Arrange prison visits, maintain contact with family and friends, ensure fair treatment, and assist with deportations for U.S. citizens arrested abroad.
  • Voting Assistance: Provide absentee voting assistance for U.S. federal and local elections.
  • Notary Services: Prepare documents for notarization and answer public inquiries about notary services.
  • Event Planning and Outreach: Plan and attend outreach events, maintain building and maintenance contacts.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A secondary education in administration or an equivalent field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience involving extensive public contact and the application of complex laws or regulations in government administration, social work, or consular services.
  • Fluency in English (speaking, reading, and writing) and German (speaking, reading, and writing).
  • A good working knowledge of French or Italian (speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
