Central Animal Care and Veterinary Expert

We are seeking a highly experienced veterinary professional to lead the Central Animal Facility at the University of Bern. The successful candidate will have a strong background in laboratory animal medicine, excellent management skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Key Responsibilities- Direct the operation of the Central Animal Facility, ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines.
- Provide veterinary clinical, surgical, and medical care to the animal population.
- Supervise the hygiene and monitoring program, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for animals and staff.
- Manage the animal stock using the database system, optimizing resources and efficiency.
- Plan and participate in emergency, weekend, and holiday care, providing 24/7 support.
- Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring best practices and regulatory compliance.
- Advise researchers on genetically modified mouse breeding and research procedures, providing expertise and guidance.
- Ensure compliance with the regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, University directives, and process specifications.
- Participate in building renovation projects, contributing to the development of new facilities and infrastructure.
- Support the ECLAM residency program and internal education, promoting knowledge sharing and professional development.
- A doctorate in veterinary medicine and a specialization in laboratory animal medicine (ECLAM/ACLAM diploma or board eligibility).
- Practical experience in breeding genetically modified models, with experience with fish or zebrafish being a plus.
- Proven management experience and leadership in complex structures, with a strong track record of success.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with teams and stakeholders.
- Proficiency in English, with German being an advantage.
